Which NYC airport to use?
 

I will be flying from NYC to Washington, DC in mid May after staying at the New York City Marriott at the Brooklyn Bridge. Which airport in NYC makes the most sense to use as far as ease of getting to it and maybe other considerations?

How would you get from the hotel to the airport?

It's much closer to Manhattan.

Either airport is fine, but I prefer JFK. You can take subway to Manhattan and take NY airport bus service from Port Authority, Grand Central or Penn Station. Here's the link.

Another option is to take Super Shuttle.

Your hotel is in Brooklyn right? If you're keen to save a little, I'd take the A train to JFK. I believe the station is Jay Street/Borough Hall but you'll want to check.

Otherwise, I'd take a cab to Laguardia.

I have not made reservations yet but I expect that it will be around mid day and on Tuesday, May 27 or Wednesday, May 28. We will have a large (26&quot;) suitcase. Would that complicate the subway trip?

For some unknown reason, I was warned away from the Super Shuttle.

that's correct. We took the subway from behind the Marriott back to Manhattan after our walk across the Brooklyn Bridge, DUMBO, etc.

You were probably warned away from SuperShuttle because there have been lots of posts from people who have had problems with them and think they're unreliable - especially from hotels to the 3 airports.

Particularly if you have a large suitcase, take a taxi or car service to LGA.

JFK is a LONG way away and traffic can be atrocious (as it can to LGA, but it's not as far).

Might I ask why you are flying if ease of transportation to the airport is your prime concern?

If you compare the amount of time it takes to get to LaGuardia, the time you need to be there to get through security, the time it takes to board, the frequent runway delays at LaGuardia, and the trip from Washington National into DC - might you not be better off taking the Acela Express?

I think the train gets from NY Penn to Union Station in a shade under 3 hours. You could leave about an hour before your train time versus the 2 1/2 hours you might need to give yourself heading to LGA.

With Penn Station, you could easily catch the subway in Brooklyn and be at the Amtrak counter in under 25 minutes.

I held off on mentioning my FAVORITE travel spot - the Acela Quiet Car - as I didn't want to sound like I was advertising for Amtrak.

Now that it's out there.. how can one resist?

Good suggestions, all. I just don't like dragging the suitcase around. But the train sounds good and I know that there is something called the Vamoose Bus from DC to NYC and back, leaving from Penn Station I think. It only costs $25 one way, or did last time I saw it advertised. So I'll check into that.

I agree that flying and airports are no fun anymore having survived several encounters in the last few weeks. My feelings are to avoid going to or through NY airports at any cost.

It looks like they pick up at a few spots in Brooklyn as well as several in Manhattan.

For DC I would definitely do the train. Takes you center city to center city and avoids all of the security issues - and potential delays of airports.

Most of Amtrak nationwide is a crapshoot - but the NE corridor is generally reliable - and much more comfortable than being packed in one of those flying sardine cans.

If you can avoid flying into a NY airport - do! We try to fly out of Newark before dawn when we travel.

According to recent data, EWR has worse delays than both LGA &amp; JFK, plus it's a hassle to get to &amp; from.

The delays at JFK continue when you try to leave the airport and sit in ridiculous traffic. I've been lucky and never get delayed at Newark. I'm not recommending that the OP fly in and out of there, though. Just saying it's a good idea to avoid the airports here if you have a way to.

I've heard of missed pickups from Super Shuttle, but that's never happened to me and I've used SS more than a dozen times. The first time I tried nycairportlink, they no show'd on me.
