Which neighborhood /area and why? (NYC)
 

Hello everyone

Freshly home from NYC. I'm contemplating staying in a new 'hood the next time. Maybe.

For frequent visitors (or residents), do you tend to prefer a given neighborhood over another one and if so, why? With one exception so minor/short/long ago it doesn't count, I've never stayed north of the Hilton on 53rd.

I went through a mid-town phase for ten or so trips, and then moved south for the next several trips including once far downtown near Battery Park. Mid town was usually the Hilton or near it because it was so central. A handful of trips I stayed in the low 30s. But I always found myself leaving the neighborhood when I was in either place, usually to wander south.

I really like Soho/West Village because I can do and see quite a bit without ever needing to get on the subway. When I stayed in Soho but further south/east, I walked both the Williamsburg and the Brooklyn bridge directly from the hotel - all in the same walk actually!

This last visit was the Courtyard Marriott on Varick, right at the edge of Soho before it becomes West Village (7th Ave and Charlton, more or less). Great location although I'd love to find a place to stay right on Washington Square Park some visit.

I would like to stay in a new area next time because it's so much easier to explore a neighborhood when you are sleeping there. Even staying in different parts of Soho /Battery Park showed me some new stuff I didn't pay attention to the last visit.

So with that, which areas have been your favorite and why do you prefer to stay in that 'hood?

We usually stay in a neighborhood which allows us to reach both the Met and Broadway/off-Broadway theatres easily since that is the main reason we go to NYC. We generally travel on the subway but also have walked to many of the venues.

If you'd like to stay right on Washington Square, then stay at the Washington Square Hotel. It's right there on the northwest corner of the park. Another nearby alternative is the Walker Hotel on west 13th Street. There are many more downtown options than there used to be, so it's certainly possible to stay in the Village if that's your preference.

I liked my stay at the Lucerne Hotel. Near Museum of Natural History and Central Park. Subway, good restaurants nearby.

Yes, midtown is really good for the theaters. Maybe I'll start focusing on shows in next trips - but stay a bit north next time and check it out.

I'd definitely give the Upper West Side a try -- it's much more of a residential area, but with loads of shops and restaurants, not to mention Central Park, the Museum of Natural History, Columbia University, Lincoln Center, the Beacon Theater, easy subway access. Lots of hotel choices. When we're in NY, we walk everywhere, including to and from the UWS/Theater District (last time I was there, my friend and I walked home from the Beacon Theater at 76th and Broadway to her apartment at 49th and 1st, at midnight).
