Not really

We will be visiting N.Y. for the first time next month. We are going to be using my husband's Marriott points and wonder which Marriott would be in the best location?

W. 40th Street or Third Ave.

I guess that depends. The one on 40th street is in the middle of Times Square. It is the Marriott Marquis and even has a Broadway theatre in it (currently showing Thoroughly Modern Millie, which was thoroughly entertaining, btw). You will be walking distance to Times Square (duh), all Broadway shows, 5th Ave shopping, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's etc.

The one on Third Avenue (the Marriott Eastside) is probably a little bit nicer and is in a quieter, midtown neighborhood. Walking distance to 5th & Madison Aves shopping, Rockefeller Center, St. Patrick's, etc. A further walk to Times Square, but a straight shot on public transportation to most of the museums (Metropolitan, Guggenheim, Whitney, Frick, etc). I think the restaurant selections near the Marriott Eastside are better.

For me, I'd stay on the east side, but that's because I don't like all the constant hubbub of Times Square. As a tourist, you may prefer to be in the middle of the "action."

FYI The Marriott Marquis is on Broadway at 45th Street NOT 40th Street. A very bustling big hotel...full of tourists, groups, and running kids. The Eastside Marriott is at Lexington Ave. / 49th Street and more sedate. Great quieter neighborhood. Close to all transportation, subway and buses, shopping and less touristy restaurants. More to my liking.

If this is your first trip to the City, I would suggest staying at the Marriott Marquis.

The hotel is very large with a nice view of the city from most rooms. The Lobby is on the 7th Floor and the elevators from there are glass, so you get to the the atrium.

There is a cute bar that revolves on the lobby level and the restaurant. There is also a restaurant on the top floor with more views of the city.

Staying there you are in the heart of everything and either a cab ride, bus ride or subway ride to everything you will want to see.

Another marriott property that I personally stayed at for nearly eight months is the Renaiassance in Times Square. It is definitely smaller but so much less of hassle in terms of elevators and people. And of course, the hotel staff is great.

If there is a reason you are looking only into Marriott, then I'd recommend also checking out the Renaissance. It's across the street from the Marriott Marquis, so the location is comparable to that one. I prefer it because it's a bit more intimate than the overwhelming size of the Marquis. I've been very pleased with the service and rooms there as well.

Since your upcoming trip is very soon, you may not have that much of choice of hotels where you can redeem points. I'd check into that first!
In addition to the Marriott and Renaissance properties mentioned, there are also a couple Courtyard by Marriott properties in NYC, which require far fewer points.
