Which Island in August?
I am trying to plan next years holiday, a bit keen I know but not at the booking stage yet!
I was more or less decided on Hawaii until I read this site and learn't that the weather can be quite unpredictable in August.
Going with children means that we plan to spend a lot of time outdoors and obviously if it's going to be raining a lot then this could spoil things some what?
I would really appreciate any advice on the weather for this month also which island gets the best. I like the sound of Kauai but weather wise that seems the worse !!
Thanks

Lix.
Just got back from Oahu where it was warm and sunny for four days and a little bit of off/again on/again rain for one day. Honolulu was warmer and brighter than the Windward side, which can be a little overcast (fine with me). I went in August last year, too, and had lovely weather.

Michele

The rain usually starts in the afternoon. I wouldn't cancel out a trip because of it though. Remember it is still warm so you can be outside as long as you don't mind getting wet.

The side of the island you are on makes a difference too. We live in Kona and get A LOT less rain then Hilo side. We also live about 20 minutes up the mountain from town and get more rain then town does (where the hotels and condos are). My 16 yr old sister came and loved the fact she could be out in the rain and not be cold!

Current weather report...
Gorgeous, sunny, warm, light breeze, gentle showers twice today (5 min each).
Actually, Aug. is perhaps the best month to visit the islands for the general consistancy of the weather and the reduced tradewinds.
Keep in mind that the Leeward side or south shore is always much clearer than the Windward sides (NE).
Go ahead, book that trip and enjoy a wonderful vacation in beautiful Hawaii... Aloha

The Northshore of Kauai would be a wonderful trip in August. The beaches are incredible and very swimmable during the summer. We do Kauai in January during the rainy season with our two young kids and always have a great time, rain or no rain! My kids love Hanalei Bay and Ke'e Beach. If your kids are older, hiking down to Secret Beach near Kileaua, is a great experience. During the summer, I would recommend the Northshore over the Poipu area and in terms of beautiful scenery, there is nothing like the northshore of Kauai. (Would also, like many others, recommend purchasing a copy of The Ultimate Kauai Guidebook and looking through it before making a decision as to which island to visit. Same authors also do books on the Big Island (a great book and another great island to visit with kids. Worth a trip to the Hilo/Volcano side and the Kona area) and a new so-so Maui book.)

I agree. August is a great time to go anywhere in Hawaii. Kauai is definitely my favorite, and the north shore should be great in August. You may get a shower here and there - but hey -this is Hawaii - you want it green! I also recommend the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook - well worth it!
