Which island for teens
I am in the process of planning a week in Hawaii with my kids (16 boy, 13 girl) and am having trouble deciding on which island. Both of them hate shopping, I'm the only shopper. Both are outdoorsy, like camping, hiking, fishing, etc. They love history...and hate touristy areas. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

You can find areas on all of the islands that will meet their needs. Even Oahu, which people tend to equate with Waikiki, has lovely un-touristed areas. Let them sit down with guidebooks and see what appeals to them. There are opportunities for hiking on all islands, there are ziplines, there are small towns with a lot of history... Are there particular things that want to do, like learn to surf?

No, they know how to surf already...they are mainly wanting to hike, kayak, snorkel, etc. My son said he wants to ride atv's.

THIS is a travel website --

We love Oahu. So much to do.

There is good hiking and kayaking on Kauai which has the only navigable rivers in Hawaii (although you can certainly kayak on the other islands).
As far as ocean fishing, know that in Hawaii the fish belongs to the boat. We went fishing in Kauai our first trip and my husband caught an ono, the skipper only gave us two filets and kept the rest. Something to keep in mind and ask about. |
When I hear "outdoorsy," "hiking," and less touristy, I think of my favorite island: KAUAI!
