Which hotel in Santa Monica - Georgian or Doubletree?
 

We will be in Santa Monica for 4 days at the end of December. We have a choice between 2 hotels - the Georgian and the Doubletree - which one should we choose?

We stayed at the Doubletree for a week in September. Had a one-bedroom suite that was very comfortable. There are a lot of amenities in the hotel itself, the staff is very hospitable, and the location seemed safe (just a stone's throw from the police station). It was an easy walk to the promenade. All in all it was a very pleasant stay. Haven't been to the Georgian, so I can't comment on it.

Thanks - the website makes the Doubletree look like more of a business traveller's hotel, whereas the Georgian looks like more of a tourist hotel. Can anyone comment on the difference?

Doubletree is more business oriented. I stayed there when I was interviewing and our company has banquets there. However, it was very nice and the staff very hospitable. Like the other poster said, it was walking distance to the pier and promenade.

I work two blocks up the street from the Georgian-- so I'll comment (even though you're probably already here-- this is for future visitors).

The Georgian is a historic hotel right on Ocean Avenue-- on a bluff overlooking the Pacific. Its architecture is classic American Art Déco, similar to what you find in Miami Beach. It is classy, well-maintained, laid-back and beautiful on the outside. I have not stayed there, however. Friends who have tell me it's very nice, but it's definitely an older property (smallish rooms).

The Doubletree is a fine business hotel, but it's not ocean-view. It's just off the on-ramp to the I-10 freeway, and it's a nice new hotel with all the nice business amenities. My complaint, other than its freeway-convenient location (a shortish walk to the Pier and Promenade), is its lack of character.

Neither would be my first choice, money no object-- that would be the Fairmont Miramar, hands down. But the Georgian would be MY choice of the two you're looking at.
