Planter's Inn is $400.00 + for my dates. Too rich for my blood! (I don't want to invest in the place! )

But it is lovely.

Some people have found very good rates in Charleston by using Priceline. You might want to give it a try.

I've never reserved anything through Priceline, but I just did a quick test search for 5 mid-week nights during your target dates. I found one room (only one at this price) available for $156 per night at The Barksdale House, a b&b in the historic district, just off Meeting Street at 27 George Street. I don't know anything about the b&b, but the interior photos were lovely.

I like Priceline and have used it before. Thanks for the heads up about this B&B.

Beautiful hotel, iris1745. Too expensive for me at $378.00 ++ for my dates. It appears I'm planning my visit at a popular time just before the temperatures really start to climb.

If you plan to have a rental car in Charleston, you really should consider staying just over the bridge in Mt Pleasant or at one of the nearby beach areas. Hotel rates will be much cheaper in April if you move outside of the historic district.

Maybe, maybe not. If it is garden week, everything is expensive. I've stayed at the Holiday Inn in Mt.Pleasant.
I would REALLY check hotwire and priceline, and maybe downplay my expectations for a nice hotel, and say, it's just a room. Charleston for "events' gets REALLY pricy--our grandson plays in tennis tournaments and they have gotten caught in that trap.

We travel now with children and dogs so our choices might be different, but we've liked the Indigo Inn the last 2 times we've been there. We've also stayed at the Residence Inn Riverfront, which is just over the bridge from downtown. Both places were clean and friendly. We've had a car each time too. I've also stayed at the Vendue Inn and liked it. It was about 12 years ago though. My family who lives there picked it. hth

We stayed at the Hampton Inn - here is my review on Tripadvisor. As I said, if I had it to do over I'd choose the Doubletree... Have fun! Loved Charleston!

I stayed at the Doubletree this time last year and found it great. The price was right around the 200 dollars you wanted to spend, the location was great, and the rooms were lovely and clean. My room also had a little balcony so that was lovely to make you feel a part of the city. If you can get it for a good price I would stay there again.

But I agree with some of the other posters who say just pick a place and don't sweat so much about the 'perfect' place as you really are not in the room all that much anyway..there is too much to see and do in Charleston! Enjoy your visit..I am so envious as I would love to go back. It is a beautiful city and I still can close my eyes and feel the warm breezes and hear the city. The waterfront parks are beautiful and the HD is really quite addictive.

Not yet, suewoo. Flights are limited and expensive for my dates. We'll see...

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but this near it's probably not going to get cheaper.
Have you checked Charlotte and drive--about 3 hours. We are getting Southwest and have Jet Blue--at least I think so.
Same is true of less expensive hotels in Charleston.
