My wife and I have been to all of the Hawaiian Islands a couple of times. For what you describe, our recommendation is the Manele Bay Hotel on Lanai. It's hard to us to describe this place without sounding like a couple of drooling sycophants. It is a beautiful, exotic looking place with outstanding accomodations, food and services. It is also on a magnificant uncrowded beach, where the swimming, snorkeling, and just lazin' are great. It is where we would have gone for our honeymoon if we had known about it then. The only drawback is that it is pretty pricey. Another great place is the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Spa on Kaua'i. Also very beautiful, and wonderful for relaxing. It is on the southern side of the island, which consistently has the best weather, and it is on a beautiful beach, known a Shipwreck Beach. Somewhat less pricey than Manele Bay, but definitely not cheap.

We just got back from Manele Bay Hotel in Lanai where we did nothing but pool/beach/dinner day after day. It was wonderful. Unfortunately we ran out of cash and clean underwear and had to come home. Very relaxing. Lanai fits what you are looking for perfectly.

Lanai is probably your best bet.

We spent 10 days on the Big Island last spring, and I can't say enough about doing nothing there! We were at the Hapuna Prince Hotel for the first half, and the beach there and the sister resort Mauna Kea were breathtaking. By far the best beaches I have ever seen. We also stayed at the Four Seasons on the Big Island for 5 nights, and it was luxurious and relaxing. The Hapuna or Mauna Kea are great values, and you have beach access right there. The most we did was walk to the other property for lunch or a swim. We also rented snorkel gear one day and explored a bit, but that was for an "active" day! We have been to Maui, Kauai, and Wakkaki Beach, and I would highly recommend the Big Island or Kauai at the Hyatt. Enjoy your trip!

I love tranquility but was preferred Molokai over Lanai, more dining choices on Molokai plus the little town to drive around (bigger than Lanai's). Maybe I missed something but there weren't many roads to go sightseeing/driving?

I agree with Suze....Oahu is hands down my favorite.
Aspalm, it's true that WAIKIKI is like any beach anywhere, but what about the other beaches on the island?? Kailua Beach is one of the most awesome, unique, and secluded beaches in all of Hawaii. Waimanalo is just as nice. |
Since starrsville went outside the box with St. Lucia, I will too. If it's laid back, relaxing you want, try French Polynesia, 4-5 hours beyond Hawaii.

Yes, French Polynesia is VERY laid back! Too laid back IMO. And TOO expensive for what you get. VERY nice but the beaches aren't very good at all.
