Which area to stay in SF?

I'll be bidding on Priceline. Can't decide between FW and USE areas. We've never been to SF before, so 'tacky and touristy' is not a problem and I think we would actually like FW. But the 4* USE properties seem to be much nicer than the 3* FW, and sometimes actually come up cheaper. I'd hate to get a disappointing room in FW when we could have gotten something nicer in USE for less. But, we won't be doing shopping, expensive dining, or theater, so I can't imagine we'd be spending a lot of time in the Union Square area. I'll be 6 months pregnant on the trip and so we'll be taking cables cars etc to get around as much as possible to save my energy. What would you recommend?

We bid on priceline for the Union Square area and got the Hilton for $65.00 -- with tax & fees, it worked out to $75.00 per night for 4 nights.

Some people will discourage Union Square, but we thought it was fine, close to public transportation, and only a couple of blocks from the Cable Car and trolley lines. You could even walk to Chinatown. ((b))

I agree. It is easy to get back to Union Square from any place you might be to take an afternoon break in your hotel room there. Be sure to get the 3-day pass good on all transit (including cable car). The transit map at $3-4 is also an invaluable help.

we just got back from a wonderful wkend in San Fran. Stayed in Union square. It is right up Powell Street, which has a Bart station if you go to/from SFO airport. Powell STreet is the cable car line, and Stockton has a great bus line to take yo uright into N Beach. We didn't do much around Union sq but it sure was easy to get everywhere else in the city!

Being from Boston we found the taxi fairs very, very reasonable.. we stayed on Post Street.

I'm not experienced with bidding on Priceline, so not sure how it works. But I've seen people getting Hyatt Embarcadero for very good prices. It seems to be the perfect location for you, to me. Easy access to all kinds of transportation and sites. (Cable Cars, Muni, BART, Ferries, Trams) Even views.

Thanks. Decided to go with USE. Got the Grand Hyatt on Priceline for a great price. Can't wait to go!

Monique, if you haven't already - go to the Hyatt website and sign up for the Hyatt Gold Passport (it's free). the passport MAY get you an upgrade, and will definitly entitle you to free coffee or tea, daily newspaper, and use of the the fitness centers (if the hotel you are in has one). You can also 'earn' free nights with the passport, and I have alsways been credited for my stays even though I have been a priceline customer. Enjoy SF, it's one of my favorite citites!

Thanks, Margie. I'll sign up for it.
