If you truly want the absolute best pizza in the US, and possibly the world (this coming from my husband who lived in Italy during prime pizza-eating years) then you MUST go to DiFara's Pizza in Midwood, Brooklyn. It is about a 30 minute ride on the Q-train to Ave J from Downtown (Canal St.) Manhattan.
The man that runs the place, Dominic DiMarco, is from Italy and uses the best and freshest ingredients. The dough is whipped into shape right before he puts his own tomato sauce on. It followed by cheese that you watch him (and ONLY him) grate onto the pizza. The cheese, by the way, is only buffalo mozarella and hand grated parmigiano. He has run the joint for 40 years in the same teensy place and is the only one that makes the pizza. He has helpers that cut the pepperoni and get the artichokes ready, but he is the only person that assembles and bakes the pie. He uses a special super hot oven that gets the crust to the perfect consistency and then pulls the boiling pizza out of the oven with his bare hands and tosses the parmigiano on top. The pizza is so hot the parmigiano melts! The walls of his shop are covered with articles claiming his pizza to be superior to most, if not all. You may have to wait for 40 minutes or so for a slice but it is absolutely worth it. Of course, you can buy your own whole pie. I've heard his entrees are superb too, but I've only ever gotten the pizza. Every time I'm in his shop I hear someone boasting about how far they came to get his pizza. Definitely worth the trip. In Colorado, hoopstraveler15, our very favorites are: Hernando's in Winter Park, and the Wazee Supper Club in LoDo. Also, Angelo's, on Sixth Avenue east of downtown, is pretty good. Have you tried these?

Ah... my husband just reminded me that at DiFara's he grows his own basil and rosemary in the windows of his shop! It only gets better!!!

Best Pizza in San Luis Obispo, CA is “Fatties” on Broad Street. Huge hit here. Take out only. Chicken with white cream sauce is soooo good. No wonder it’s called Fatties! Also make the best veggie I’ve ever had, but who wants to call it “Skinnies?” :@) |
IMHO -- thw worst pizza in NYC is better than the best anywhere else!
In Goldens Bridge NY {in the A&P shopping center near the train station}, in northern Westchester Count & about an hour north of NYC <b> "Portofino's" </b> aka Dominic's has the BEST pizza/everything. Slices [come from a 24" pie] that are huge that you can get toppings added on [and then they always add some extra mozzerella on top of the toppings] too. Whole pies; salad slice; white pizza; patsa; wedges [aka grinders, subs] fish are all great. We ate there every Friday night for over 10 years. It is the first place I go to eat when I go home. I begged Dominic to move out to SW, but no go. Also, Venezia's in Albuquerque and Rio Rancho has the closest thing to NY pizza in NM. Good, but no cigar. Debi |

A few years back on a biz trip to Mineapolis I ordered a pizza to my room from a local place that boasted gourmet pizzas.
It was not traditional...was a thai curry chicken pizza....which I ordered out of shear bravery on a cold night! IT BLEW MY SOCKS OFF!!!! Was so good I tried to recreate it when I got home. Anyone know the name of this place? |
