Where's "downtown" phoenix?

Hi everyone. I'm planning on visiting Phoenix next week and I'd like to stay at a hotel near the "downtown" area of Phoenix. Where's a good part of the city to stay which is within a mile or so of the "downtown attractions?" Does anyone have any ideas where to stay for less than $70 or so a night? I'm just looking for something that's clean and has good shower.

Thanks in advance,

Jeff

Jeff, I don't think you're going to find anything for the price you want to pay! (And if you did, I don't know if you'd want to stay there.!)

If you want to find Phoenix's downtown, look for the square formed by Central Ave, 1st Ave, Washington St, and Jefferson St. I don't have enough experience with the place to say whether or not that's a good area to stay.

I think it might be hard to find something in that price range at this time of year. We just stayed at a La Quinta and it was a "special" price at $89. Any of the airport hotels would be a good location for downtown or around 44th and Washington in the Gateway area...they have a Hampton Inn and Marriott Courtyard or something along that line. You might try the San Carlos Hotel right in downtown...a historice, very nice hotel or Los Olivos Lodge, one block east of Central Avenue on McDowell Road... it is right across the street from the art museum, library and theatre and down the street from the Heard Museum and a short way to downtown. I think you might have really good luck there. Their phone number is 1-602-258-6911 and the price is around $80 in my year old AAA book. I think that is a good lead for both price, location and safety.
