Where would you go on the Eastern Seaboard
 

We've got 5/6 days the last week of October -- want to drive somewhere within 8 hr radius from Albany New York for a relaxing vacation -- love small towns -- good restaurants -- beautiful scenery -- Can anyone help????

What kind of things do you want to do? There really are so many places. Montreal is certainly within range, or Toronto. Of course, those aren't small towns. I like Manchester Vermont. Nice little shops, outlet stores, good restaurants, and the scenery is beautiful.

St. Michaels Maryland--This small town seems busy even in Oct and Nov. so should check for lodging..
Best Western as you go into town has nice rooms--not fancy and the town is great for walking.
Few miles away is "3 car" ferry to Oxford where you can get the best crab cakes in all of Chesapeake . As you get off the ferry ,the Inn is right up the hill.
Tilghman Island and Easton interesting and all mentioned areas are with in a 50 mile circle..
Remember the weather canbe very unpredictable this time of year..

Cape Cod is very do-able. The weather is still good and places are not over-run with school-age children.

Do a circle drive. North to the Ivy Lea bridge into Canada, visit Kingston and Prince Edward County, then Toronto, then Stratford and St. Marys, down to Niagara Falls and Niagara on the Lake, and back home on the thruway.

Or, if you don't want to drive this much....

Albany -- Kingston -- Ottawa -- back to Albany. Stop in Perth and Smith Falls and Merrickville on the way to and from Kingston-Ottawa-Kingston, but spend your overnights in just two places; Kingston and Ottawa.

Sadly you will be too late for the fantastic fall foliage. However, a drive north along the Hudson River is very scenic...route 9A maybe. Stop at Fort Tichondaroga (sp?), a revolutionary war site. Then cut over and do the back roads of Vermont with its quaint little towns and historic covered bridges. Then head for the coast - New Hampshire or Mass. I'm not sure which is better the scenery or the fresh seafood. (LOBSTER!!!) Your drive back could be through southern New Hampshire or Northern Mass.

By the way where are you from? That might make a difference in what you would want to see.

Your best bet is probably the Berkshires in Massachusetts. Lenox and Stockbridge sound like exactly what you are looking for in terms of a small New England town with lots of restaurants, B&B's, etc. The scenery is great, and less than 1 hr. from Albany.

I recommend the Berkshires too. Great scenery and there are the Bish bash falls south of Lenox. Don't miss the Norman Rockwell museum in Stockbridge!
