Where will you be this Thanksgiving?

Just curious I see the post that says less air travel this Thanksgiving. Wondering if this means less people will connect with relatives this holiday? Where will you be?

Grasshopper Nov 20th, 2001 06:55 AM

On a plane for a good part of it.... to Keystone for a wonderful relaxing weekend in my Paradise!!! : ) (by the way, with two of my loved ones and meeting another there)

Sarah Nov 20th, 2001 06:57 AM

very sweet grasshopper... where is keystone and what is it like?

Grasshopper Nov 20th, 2001 07:03 AM

Keystone is my favorite ski resort in the Rockies. They refer to it as the Nature of the Rockies and it truly is:
http://keystone.snow.com/ Great combination of natural beauty and fun things to do; frozen lake for ice skating, cute villages for shopping in, great restaurants and wonderful condos. Watching the sunset over the Rockies from a hot tub with a glass of wine in the snow is sublime.

sarah Nov 20th, 2001 07:08 AM

so to keep asking you questions on this but do you think you will get snow this weekend? Just started skiing last winter and I am completely hooked, thought it was dicey in November to find snow.

Sarah Nov 20th, 2001 07:08 AM

that was sorry to keep....

Richard Nov 20th, 2001 07:20 AM

I will be flying into New Mexico from the east coast (NYC). Always love this flight as we have a stop over in Dallas and people from the North East are heading there for a thanksgiving football game. Not interested in football but love seeing excited fans making their way. For me it is onto a Southwestern holiday YUM YUM & YUM! Family in Albuquerque the following weekend we head to Santa Fe for the afternoon then of course on Sunday it is back to the salt mines in NYC.:):)Love going home.

grasshopper Nov 20th, 2001 07:23 AM

Sarah,
According the website it will snow all four days.

Susan Nov 20th, 2001 08:54 AM

Don't have to travel far to my childhood home in Los Gatos, Ca. It is supposed to rain, too bad. There's usually a lively basketball game in the backyard on Thankgiving. And my brother-in-law wants to deep fry a turkey in the backyard. Anyone ever do this?

Roger Nov 20th, 2001 08:58 AM

Unfortunately, Wadsworth, Ohio. There is no duller place in the universe than my father-in-law's home. There is no duller person on earth than my father and sister-in-law.

cj Nov 20th, 2001 09:03 AM

Sarah,

We are not spending our Thanksgiving in an exotic place. We are having 18 family members in Rochester, NY at our home for a great traditional Italian/Lebanese dinner. We have to put also do the Turkey and trimmings for our Irish daughter in law. Sounds like the league of Nations, but it freaken amazing. I love family get togethers. Hop yous is great too.

Sarah Nov 20th, 2001 09:58 AM

cj:I just like hearing where people are going. I will only be driving 2 1/2 hours to Southern New Jersey.I will be volunteering near the WTC site for the red cross 12am-8am Thanksgiving morning. This is my story anyway to keep from doing those dishes:). But really, I hope I am not too tired.

dlo Nov 20th, 2001 09:58 AM

First of all, I skiied at Keystone like 8 years ago, you are lucky!

I am heading to NY from Atl tomorrow nite. Spend a little time with the folks, and see Kiss Me Kate on Saturday nite.

Have a happy, everyone!

Sourpuss Nov 20th, 2001 10:06 AM

I'll be driving from New Jersey to my parents on Long Island (wearing my new plaid suit) where I will sit on their couch, drink cheap beer, eat turkey, look at my watch and be thankful Thanksgiving is only once a year.

Jeanette Nov 20th, 2001 02:15 PM

This year, like every other, I will be thanking God for the fact that I can host my parents (80's) and also my entire living family. They can all drive to me within 2 hours. I am very, very lucky. I will have between 25 and 35 for dinner. Everyone can bring any person with them who doesn't have somewhere to go. We also go from about 10am in the morning until whenever. Dinner is at 1 but some come at 3 and eat later. We play cards, games, and watch Detroit lose all at the same time. We also drink and eat like every good Italian family does. Turkey is just the beginning.

I also thank God that I really don't have anyone with sourpuss's attitude on this particular holiday. One nephew is bringing me his U. of Chicago school mates and has already called, making me promise not to pick teams for Trivial Pursuit until he gets there. We don't need to fly this year at all, but in past years nephews have come home from Philadelphia and NYC schools. This year I will only be missing one neice who is trying to break the ties in Columbus, Ohio. She'll be back.

Sourpuss, I wish you could come to my house and taste the wine I brought home from Italy. Why don't you try bringing some real good beer with you- and also a present for the cook. It might not work- but it's a start.

kal Nov 20th, 2001 05:18 PM

Jeannete, very nice post.

We will be driving to Napa Valley (Yountville) for a combined T'giving/Wedding anniv. 3 day stay.
We'd fly but my private pilot friend is going to be out of town. Some friend! ;^D

Looks like the rainy weather will be coming thru No Cal. for those days but the room has a fireplace!

Happy Thanksgiving to all fellow Fodie's
Kal

Carol Nov 20th, 2001 07:25 PM

We are fortunate enough to live at a resort area (Wild Dunes in Isle of Palms, SC). We have an early dinner and then normally go over to the beach to sit for about an hour and count all of our blessings. My top one is that I'm a 2 year breast cancer survivor and every single day is Thanksgiving for me.

Wishing you all a great holiday!

Suzie Nov 21st, 2001 08:06 AM

Kal,
With this rain you'll have the place to yourself. Wave to those stuck in traffic going the other way, the ones in the 4 wheel drives with the snowboards and skis on top. Cheers!
Ann Nov 21st, 2001 08:44 AM

Grasshopper--hope it's not too warm for skiing. I heard they cancelled a World Cup event in Aspen because of the warm weather.

grasshopper Nov 21st, 2001 09:04 AM

Not much snow so far, however, it is expected to snow all weekend. Don't really plan to ski anyway. Just relax and play. : )

xxx Nov 21st, 2001 09:09 AM

Jeannette I want to come to your house. I love thanksgiving at home but I love the party all day idea, we kind of have lack luster conversation after dinner or fade in front of the tube. Don't be too hard on sourpuss his post name tells us he is not happy with his predicatment. Something else not everyone has a wonderful time this holiday seeing a negative post might help some feel less alienated by whatever they have to face. That is how I see it anyway, negative responses make the contributions here more varied and therefore more reflected of entire experience. Play a round for me...what a good idea that is.

kal Nov 21st, 2001 09:43 AM

Suuuuuzzzzz,
Traffic on I-80 is backed up both ways on T'giving. Took us almost 2.5 hrs to get to Yountville last year!

Mrs Kal usually runs in the "Feed The Hungry" 10k on T'giving morn (check it out on Ch 31)so we usually get a late start and hit the traffic.

Hope that with most people NOT flying somewhere this holiday it doesn't make it worse!

You hangin' in "The R-Hood" this weekend?

Since 2 restaurants we are going to require a drive, we found a cab service in Napa Valley, "Taxi Cabernet" (love that name)to haul us around so both can partake in the fruits of the vine!

See Tiger Woods, Dave Duvall, et al on TNT's Grand Salm of Golf from Poipu? On this afternoon and replayed later tonight
39 more days!
Mahalo,
Kal

ncgrrl Nov 21st, 2001 09:45 AM

Congrats Carol!!! 2-years and counting.

And can all you No. Calif. people send the rain this way? It's been close to a month without any rain.

My parents host a wonderful meal. It's a small gathering full of traditions.

Suzie Nov 21st, 2001 10:09 AM

Kal,
Going to Lake of the Pines for the day along with other family. Bummer that it's raining. Trapped inside with my kids, nieces and nephews. Hand me a gin and tonic!

Going to Sonoma in Feb for sister getaway weekend, thinking about getting limo so we can all partake as well.

Hope Mrs. Kal has a better time than Paul, Joe or Jack (I can never keep them straight) so an additional contribution can be made to the food bank by those radio stations.

wow 39 days sounds so soon.

sss Nov 21st, 2001 10:16 AM

Suzie let us know where lakeo of the pines is....would be nice of you to paint us a mental picture of this place, west coast/eastcoast/south?

Suzie Nov 21st, 2001 10:18 AM

Lake of the Pines is north of Auburn in North CA. It's off rt 49 between Auburn and Grass Valley. Can you bring the gin?

sss Nov 21st, 2001 10:24 AM

funny...just cool to hear about places way out yonder I am on the east coast, NYC.

Jeanette Nov 21st, 2001 05:29 PM

Wish you could come to my house too. I have 23 place settings all set, but we can add more on later. Need to take more dishes and flatware from the basement after work. Will get up at about 5 to stuff and "oven" the bird, but am very excited, as we love this day so much. Christmas Eve and most Christmas days my children are all elsewhere and we do our presents the Saturday before very quietly- so this is our big holiday. All 4 grandkids have their own table this year- FIRST TIME! AND no one is in diapers. YES!

Holidays can be very lonely. I've been alone some Christmas times and for almost all the summer holidays, like 4th of July. But there is always someone who is more "alone." If you ask that person over, you start new traditions. I'm not being hard on sourpuss, just want him to challenge the situation so that new traditions will bring better holidays in the future. Everything changes.

Jeanette Nov 21st, 2001 05:34 PM

Oh yes, I forgot. I live within sight of I-80 and Route 45 in Illinois- in the greater Chicago area. My house is the one with the huge prairie in the back and the house going up next to it.
(Roof on- but no bricks yet.) You will be probably be able to spot it by the cars and coolers in evidence. Also may have colored chalk drawings all over the driveways and sidewalk if it isn't raining.

x Nov 22nd, 2001 10:57 AM

I'm alone with my hubby and very happy for the holiday. It's just one day for me as I have to work tomorrow. AND I agree with Sourpuss. It's nice to think that some families really have fun on the holidays. Not mine though - Sourpuss' family reminds me of mine and I laugh! Except mine is really cheap wine!

I'm giving thanks I can spend the day my way. Hey Sourpuss, maybe you should boycott the holiday like I did. You'll have a much better time doing something else than being miserable.

I am envious of Jeanette's family though. NOW that sounds like fun! MY family usually falls asleep after dinner in front of the TV. The snoring is amazing! Sorry Jeanette I live too far away from you to visit!

Happy thanksgiving everyone. I'm giving thanks that's it is a great day - no matter how you choose to celebrate.
