Where to travel in September?

If you could travel anywhere in the USA in September, where would you go? Just looking for some information on what States, areas, or towns some of you have found interesting. We have many interests, and love trying new things and places.

I haven't been to New England in the fall, but imagine it would be a great area to visit that time of the year.

You can do tropical areas year round, or ski/snow areas anywhere -- but seems
the New England experience would be pretty special and different.

We have toured the States 5 times now. Each time about one month and find the period after Labour day the best. For the fall colours in N.England it usually starts from the North and goes then down south. So if you want peak colours the period between second half Sept. and mid to sec.half October would be best.Last year we were in Charleston and Savannah around the 23rd of Sept. and we were glad to leave for the Smoky mountaind and the Blue ridge parkway because we just could not get used to the humid heat there. We've been to NY a few times around Thanksgiving (end Nov). While we were very lucky with unseasonably warm weather, I prefer to travel when the days are longer.

This year we're going to NY and PHL in mid-September.

usa in sept makes me think of colorado. it IS fall foliage season in the mtns there. summer tourists are gone and skiers have not arrived- making the roads much less crowded. days are warm and gorgeous. nights are cool. all the mtn passes are open. any water you find is warmer. elk should be rutting/bugling in rocky mtn park. many hotels have lower rates. the locals are excited because they have time to play in their own backyard.

Yellowstone, the Tetons, Colorado, Utah, Maine . . . great time of year! Many good options. :)

Florida Keys or New York City.

New England has its best weather in early-to-mid September. The crowds are gone and the bugs are gone. We like to spend 3 nights on a quiet lake , followed by 3 nights on the coast....with lots of lobster for dinner.

San Francisco is glorious in September and October...

ASLuis Jul 20th, 2007 07:08 AM

Maine is beautiful this time of year...also Vermont. I would imagine that Jackson Hole, Wyoming (Grand Tetons) would be beauful, too - but have only visited in the summer.

I'd pick New England, or San Francisco/ Central Coast (Carmel, Monterey, Big Sur, Cambria).

Never been to Boston and the Maine area and I am going this mid-September and I can't wait!
San Diego/La Jolla is gorgeous in September..tourists are gone and you get the beaches to yourself and the weather is perfect..
San Francisco and Napa Valley are another fav of mine.

Thank you all for your suggestions. We had thought about New England, or SC. Have been to most of the places suggested (except New England), however not in September. I read somewhere that the traffic was terrible in the New England area in Sept. Does anyone know if that is true?
Thanks Tovarich for the heads up on the humidity in SC during Sept. Hadn't thought about that.

New England is beautiful in September and being from MA that is when we got married....9/23 - gorgeous weather. It shouldn't be too crowed as kids are back in school then and it isn't leaf peeping time yet.

I'm from the UK and we have been to US on holiday many times. Our Month of choice is always September (just after your Labour day).

Weather in New England always nice with maybe an odd iffy day. Traffic no problem at all.

Toured Pensylvania/Virginia, again lovely weather and no traffic problems.

Last year we toured Finger lakes up to Niagara falls and the weather was not too good, it rained a lot, but we did manage to get some good days and again traffic no problem anywhere.

Sept is gorgeous in the northeast. I've been to Nantucket the first week of Sept (after Labor Day) many times and it's idyllic.

china_cat Jul 24th, 2007 06:09 AM

traffic is not particularly bad in New England in September. With the usual caveats around Labor day, or in downtown Boston at rush hour. Or normal weekend traffic (heading out of town on Fridays).

The peak traffic associated with foliage season is usually around Columbus day weekend in October.

September is a great time to visit the north east. Not so much for foliage, but for everything else.
