Hello, Hope it's not too late to reply to your request. My three suggestions would be Charleston, SC, Bar Harbor, Maine area or Woodstock, Vermont. It just depends on what you want to do. They are all lovely. charleston is the most lively, but the other two are so beautiful. Nancy

Now that I know your husband is an architect, I feel even more strongly that he would enjoy Charleston or Nantucket, which hasn't been mentioned, but you can fly right in (expensive flight), it is GORGEOUS in September, and there will be loads of beautiful inns in your price range.
IMO, Nantucket is the most beautiful place in the United States, especially in September when it's quieter.

nina - Thank you for your suggestions. We haven't been to either location, and I will look into both. Never thought of Nantucket. I have so many wonderful suggestions from this board, it will be hard to decide. I do think, however, that going east would make sense, not to much travel time involved then. That totally contradicts our previous selections. If you can suggest specific Inns or hotels in either location, I would appreciate that also. Thank you.

Well, if the city or region should be architecturally significant, if you haven't been to the LA area, there's actually a treasure trove of architecturally significant buildings by architects like Irving Gill, Frank Lloyd Wright, Charles and Ray Eames, Richard Maier, Frank Gehry, Rudolf Schindler, Richard Neutra, Paul Williams, etc.
Palm Springs is great for mid-century architecture, especially for houses. The whole area is pretty unique as far as its resort architecture-- subtly "out there" without being dazzlingly modern. I usually stay with friends, so I can't recommend hotels.

Suggestions for Nantucket inns, The White Elephant, Harbor Cottages at the Boat Basin, Cliff Lodge, Jared Coffin House, The Summer House.
So many nice inns to choose from in Nantucket, most are gorgeous.

charleston! The food is great, the beaches will be quiet by then and the strolling and shopping is heavenly. Also take a real tour so you can learn the revolutionary war and civil war history details..take in an old low country home from the 19th century as well. It is a unique part of the USA and very aesthetically pleasing to the eye and palate. The marshlands of SC and the shores are also uniquely lovely.

I would take a trip to Las Vegas and then take a side trip to the Grand Canyon in the air. If you only have 3 days, take one of the flightseeing tours. It's expensive, but with limited time, it's the best way to see the Canyon.
Have fun whatever you do.
