where to stop between San diego and San francisco?
We are planning on being around San Diego for a week and then plan to do the "drive" up the coast to San Francisco..Can anyone give any advice on where to stop for the night on the way..I think the drive would be too much for one day and see the sights. thanks for any advice.. Megan

If you're taking the quick coastal or nearly coastal route, that would be the 101 from L.A. If so, you could stay in San Luis Obispo, where there are lots of reasonable accommodations, including the very charming Apple Farm Inn (and restaurant). If you plan to take the scenic rte. 1, Big Sur Highway, you could stay in Cambria on Moonstone Drive (across a narrow street from the ocean). Or you could still stay in SLO, where rte.1 branches off towards Cambria and Big Sur. Taking that route not only gets you the Big Sur coastline, but Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula.

If you are planning to drive up through Big Sur, do you have another night to spare? You can do the drive with one overnight - SLO, Cambria, Morro Bay - all good choices, but if you've got an extra night, so much the better. There is a lot to see along the way - absolutely gorgeous coastline.
Without stops, San Diego to SLO will be 4 1/2 to 5 hours, then SLO to SF will be another 4 1/2 to 5 hours. |
We LOVE Cambria and stay there for a weekend every so often. Some nice hotels and restautants on Moonstoone Beach, and lots of fun stores in town. It's close to Hearst Castle as well if you are interested in that. As others have said, do take your time coming up the coast, it is an absolutely beautiful drive!

No one else will recommend this: The Ragged Point Inn 30 miles north of Cambria. See this web site for this property right on the edge of the cliff over the Ocean on the PCH in Big Sur.
