Where to stop between New Haven, CT and New Jersey?

We are driving from New Haven, CT to New Jersey and wondering where would be good places to stop. It's our first trip to that part of the East Coast. We've been to NYC many times and be avoiding that area this time. We will be leaving New Haven around lunch and have all day to get down to NJ. Are there any coastal towns we should visit? Any good restaurant recommendations along our drive for dinner? Looking for cool, interesting places to stop along our drive. Thanks!

What is your destination in New Jersey? Do you know the route you will be driving?

We are going to Princeton, NJ. Donít know which route we will take yet. Are there better routes than others in terms of places to stop? Or routes with less traffic?

Kykuit, the Rockefeller estate and Sleepy Hollow of Ichabod Crane fame, both in NY before you cross the Hudson River on the Tappan Zee bridge.

I don't think there's any route that will save you significantly on traffic. In this case, I think you'll find the most direct route is not the fastest. I'd definitely go across the Tappen Zee Bridge, so while you will start on I-95, you'll take 287 from around Rye. Once you're on the other side of the river, switch to the Garden State Parkway down to Route 1, and then Route 1 directly to Princeton. It's probably a bit more than 3 hours. You could also stay on 287, which also goes direct to Princeton, but which is a longer route (but has a higher speed limit).

If you want to do something along the way, I'd also suggest Kykuit, which is a short detour from your route (but has to be reserved in advance); there are other attractions in Sleepy Hollow and Tarrytown that don't require reservations. The Walkway over the Hudson or anything else I can think of would be a rather long detour and would add at least an hour of extra driving, if not more.
