Where to stay on Oahu if you have 3 nights?
My husband and I are trying to decide where to stay on Oahu for 3 nights. We are beginning our trip on Oahu because we definitely want to visit Pearl Harbor. We would also like to stay in a nice area but some area without all the crowds. I hear that Waikiki is very busy. Is the North Shore too far away to stay for just 3 nights? Can someone suggest an area and a nice hotel?
Thank you!
Thank you!

I love Waikiki Beach, but if you really don't want to stay there, you might want to consider Lanikai Beach on the windward side (past and behind Diamond Head) or Haleiwa on the North Shore if you like the laid-back '60s era kind of people. Don't know of hotels on either, but there are B&B's.

If you don't want to avoid crowds and are looking at hotels only (there at tons of BB everywhere, by the way), you only have two choices. Ko Olina resort on the west shore and Turtle Bay on the north shore.
Turtle Bay is about a 45 minute drive into Honolulu, depending on traffic, but it's a beautiful drive.
Ko Olina is about a 30 minute drive into town.
If that's too far, the Hilton Hawaiian Village might be worth a look. It's at the "edge" of Waikiki so not quite as crowded (though still crowded).

I'll second travelinandgolfin's suggestion that you consider renting a B&B. We stayed in a very nice area away from the crowds, called Kailua, very close to Kailua beach, a few yrs ago. The hosts of the B&B were VERY nice, served a good breakfast. They even let my husband crack one of their home-grown coconuts. We stayed in the studio apt., it was charming, I think they called it the Maria studio:

I also recommend the JW Marriott Ihilani hotel in Ko'Olina, which is only about a 15 min drive to Pearl Harbor. And the lagoons at the hotel are incredibly beautiful. It's also very quiet and serene in Ko'Olina. One of my favorite places on the planet.

The Kailua suggestions are great. If you want to be a little closer to Waikiki but out of the crowds try the Kahala Mandarin hotel. Located in a very rich residential section and near to alot of shopping malls and restaurants. It's only 10 to 12 minutes out of Waikiki and on a nice sandy beach. Google up their website address if interested. Have fun & Aloha!

didi,
Bellows AFB (air force base) is a good area for a quiet beach resort area. It is nearby the "national park" beach as well which is excellent for snorkeling. The bay is one of those idyllic locations you read about in love stories.
Drive to HON is increased by about 45 minutes compared to y-kiki.
Recommend search on bellows for B&Bs.

I second the Hilton Hawaiian Village, especially the Ali'i Tower... we had the same fears of crazy Waikiki, but the HHV is several smaller hotels sharing the same grounds (they call them towers). Each tower has a separate staff and there are dozens of shops and restaurants on the grounds so it never seems crowed... everything is a short cab ride away... and waking up to the surf and Diamond Head made it more than memorable...
