Where to stay on a budget

Can anyone tell me about Landover Hills, MD? I'm looking at staying at a Comfort Inn there but I'm not sure about the area. If you have suggestions for other accomodations, let me know. I don't mind driving my car and parking it at the metro stations, as long as it's a good neighborhood.

are you asking for recommendations for DC accommodations?
What's your budget?

Not that great an area. I would not stay there.

I would suggest trying College Park. There are several of the chain motels along Rt. 1, near U of MD, and there is a metro station nearby you could drive to and park.

2 years ago at Cherry Blossom time I stayed at Red Roof Inn Laurel - <$50/night!. We drove to New Carrollton metro station on Sat, then the closer (to our hotel) Greenbelt station on Sun & Mon. It was about a 10 min drive and about 1/2 hour to central DC. There's a Red Roof closer to DC/Landover at 9050 Lanham Severn Road, Lanham. Observing the Landover area from the seat of the MARC train, it did not look inviting - I think I saw the Comfort, as I was looking for places to stay on future trips. I've found Red Roofs to be a basic, but satisfactory place to stay - there's also one in Alexandria (5975 Richmond Highway) not far from the Huntington Metro stop. I've also stayed at Red Roof in DC near MCI Center & Chinatown - a little more expensive, but worth it.
I'm told by a Silver Springs resident that the College Park motels become very reasonably priced when school's not in session.

if you've got $50 to spend, I say try to priceline a hotel in arlington or even in DC itself. tourism is really taking a hit right now.

My budget is $70-$90 per night. I was a bit nervous about doing Priceline with our knowing the areas. Can you recommend an area that's nice and safe no matter where I stay? so I can bid on Priceline. I will have a car so I'd would prefer someplace where I won't have to pay for parking and I know to leave the car at the hotel and take the Metro into town.
Thank you.

For priceline, i would stay away from Springfield, Alexandria/Mount Vernon because those areas are pretty far out there.

for safety, I would stay away from Capitol Hill/Convention Center - that's a little too sketchy for my liking. The other areas may be okay. Arlington, Crytal City and Pentagon may be okay.

Bid low and increase only if your bids are rejected, because tourism is really low in DC right now and you can probably get a pretty good bargain.

Let us know how you do.

Arlington was fine when I stayed there last summer. Got the 3-star Hilton and Towers for $45 + parking ($15/night?). But a very decent place, right over a Metro station so no driving into DC required. More of a "business hotel" however - I don't think it had a pool. Of course, with Priceline you aren't guaranteed to get this exact hotel.

Look at the Washington, DC hotels section on BiddingForTravel.com. Look at the hotel list, see what's there for Arlington. There are even a few 2.5 star options that have come up pretty cheap but I don't know where they are located. Bet they'd be fine, though, based on driving all over Arlington.

Do not stay in Landover Hills! It is not a good area at all. These hotels in College Park, MD are in your price range and are close to both College park metro or Greenbelt meter ( about 5 min. by car). Also, You could stay in town at the Allen Lee Hotel - not fancy but a great, safe, location, 2 blocks from foggy bottom metro about 6 blocks from the white house: SINGLES
with private bath $58
with common bath $45
DOUBLES
with private bath $74
with common bath $62

I just stayed overnight in Alexandria VAon a PL bid that I won on the first try at $50 per night. It's conceivable that I might have gotten it for a few $ less if my first bid had been lower but it was last minute bidding with only one rebid opportunity and I didn't want to risk missing the bid.

We won the Sheraton Suites in Oldtown Alexandria. 24 hour parking with in and out privileges was $12 per day but there was free parking on the street from 5 PM to 9 AM weekdays and all weekend. We were able to park right in front of the hotel on a Friday night and it's a really nice neighborhood. No guarantee that you'd get that hotel but it's a nice area and there is a metro station.

Through Orbits, I found the Virginian Suites in Arlington for $80 a night. Their website looks good as does their amenities and I think that the metro isn't far. I'm going to do it. Wish me luck and thank you everyone for all of help. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Mimo- The Virginia Suites should be an excellent choice. It was right across the highway from the QI Iwo Jima, in fact, a pedestrian bridge spans Rt 50 from VS to QI. Plus you have plenty of amenities, and scheduled shuttle to Rosslyn, in the event your don't wish to make the walk, which is quite safe. Be sure to visit the Iwo Jima monument. You can also walk over the Key Bridge to Georgetown. BTW, some nice Italian goodies in a bakery/deli upstairs over the Rosslyn Metro station.

Have a great time in DC!
