Where to stay north of San Francisco

We have 3 nights to spend on the northern California coast after visiting San Francisco. Which of the small towns within about 4 hours of S.F. would be ideal for beautiful ocean views and a peaceful setting? Any recommendations for specific places to stay? I've never seen the Pacific Ocean, so views are important! Thanks for your advice.

Absolutely go to Mendocino. It's gorgeous, as is the drive up there (about 3 hours from SF). Lots of places to stay, some more pricey than others. I'd just go up and look for a place that suits you. Pretty easy to do midweek...weekends are tighter. Any place you stay in town will be no more than a block or two from the ocean. If you want to spend big bucks, Heritage House--right on the ocean before you get to Mendocino-- would do nicely.

The Sea Ranch. It's off the tourist map, but my favorite place along the north coast is just south of the town of Gualala. It's a one of a kind development along 10 miles of the most gorgeous coastline. One can rent a vacation home or stay at the Sea Ranch Lodge.

Suggest the romantic place with guest cottages and a gourmet restaurant at the mouth of the Russian River, called River's End - www.ilovesunsets.com

I like Harbor House just south of Mendocino....gorgeous views and perched right on the cliff overlooking the ocean.

Mendocino. You can go wine tasting in the Anderson Valley (rte. 128).
