Where to stay in WI - Devil's Head
I am looking to go to Devil's Head to do some skiing in January '06. As it is also my fiance's birthday then so I thought I would turn the trip into a weekend getaway of sorts. Does anyone know of lodging in the Devil's Head/Merrimac area that would be conducive to a "romantic" winter getaway (i.e., nice condo, small hotel or B&B with fireplace and jacuzzi in the room)?

Most people either stay at the Devil's Head lodge or drive from Wisconsin Dells or Madison. Both have a number of lodging options to choose from. The only "romantic" lodge in that area looks like Inn @ Wawanisee Point -- do a search. In the Dells there are numerous waterpark hotels but also many condo hotels. Madison is a great getaway including the Edgewater Hotel, Inn at Mansion Hill, etc.

I don't know anything about the Speckled Hen Inn but, looking at their website, they are located just outside of Madison.
The Mansion Hill Inn that was mentioned earlier is actually located on a residential street in downtown Madison so that might be a more fun location for you.
Depends on your plans.

I liked Mansion Hill Inn, too, but it was $900 for the two nights! The other place is $400 for two nights, which is much more palatable (and I figure we can drive/take taxis downtown as necessary).

I guess it's up to you to decide where to stay and what activities are most important, but I'd suggest staying closer to Devil's Head if skiing is going to be the primary activity. Madison is great and all, but I think it'll be at least a 45 minute drive to Devil's Head, and winter road conditions could cause some travel problems.
Also, it depends on whether you want to ski daytime or night. If nighttime, then staying in Madison would really be a waste, because by the time you get back to town, it'll be too late to do anything except hit the bars.
I google and found a few B&B's in the DH area. I'm sure there are other options that would work (such as the Dells).
