Where to Stay in Vail
 

Hi. My husband and I are planning to ski Colorado for the first time in February. We are planning on going to Vail and are intermediate skiers. Any recommendations on places to stay in the moderate price range would be very helpful. Someone had recommended staying in Silverthorne and driving to Vail. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. Kate check out http://www.econovail.com<BR><BR>I have stayed, years ago, at the Park Meadows lodge. We had a tiny 1 bedroom, very tiny but was fine for 2 ppl. I know we paid under 100.00 a night and that when we called they gave us a lower rate than what was on the web page. Another site that may have speicals running is http://www.vailnet.com<BR><BR>Yes Silverthorne could be less but about 30 min drive in good weather.<BR><BR>Personally if you are only skiing Vail I would try and stay in or near Vail if possible. If you’re skiing some of the Summit County areas and Vail the towns Frisco, Silverthorne or Dillon are all centrally located. Frisco would be my first choice of those towns. <BR>

I definitely wouldn't stay in Silverthorne, even if I were skiing in Summit County. Silverthorne is not a pretty place. To get to Vail from Frisco, you have to drive I-70 up the canyon past Copper Mountain and then over Vail Pass. It's not a fun trip, and if the weather is bad it can be a dangerous one. It takes about 30-45 minutes, as well. I highly recommend that you find someplace west of Vail Pass. Rates could still be good if you come before president's weekend.

If you do stay in Silvethorne stay in the Wildernest area. Breckboy is right the other part is a bit industrial. Wildernest is very nice with good trails for snowshoeing, X-Country and hiking.

Vail has a free shuttle bus system, so it's nice to arrive there, park once and forget the driving/parking bit, especially if you're only there for a short time. Worth it to stay as close to the village as possible, just for all the easily walkable amenities.

Kate, <BR><BR>Per Coloskiers req, Park Meadows is within walking distance to the Cascade Lift (a long walk, but a walk nonetheless). The Roost in West Vail has basic but good rooms. For a condo, try Fallridge or Vail Racquet Club. None of these are in town, but are on the free bus line.
