My husband and I and our two teens are planning to spend a few days in St. Augustine next month. We've never been there and would like to get suggestions on where to stay. Either a B&B or hotel/motel is fine. We'd like to be within walking distance of attractions. We're looking for more of a family friendly place rather than a wine and cheese reception every evening sort of place. We'd like to keep it under $150 a night but would consider up to $200. Thanks for any suggestions you might have!

We've stayed at the Casa Monica Hotel. This is a very nice hotel. Our friends enjoy staying at the Carriage Way B&B.

I stayed at a Comfort Suites, more by the Highway (95). Although I spent all day in the city touring, I din't mind going 10 mins to this hotel. It was surprisingly nice for the money. We paid $77 for a suite - top floor, jacuzzi tub, living room, kitchen, walk in closet. All new/great shape and this was last summer.
The pool was great, cookies (mmm), and good breakfast.
There was a lake just out from the pool where you could see the occasional alligator swimming.
I've stayed on the beach before and I would choose this again.

how about the B&Bs specifically? I need a room for one night midweek in February, and when I checked yesterday the availability at some of the web sites, it seems like the availability is wide open. I was surprised since I thought this would be considered their high season (Florida in the winter) but apparently not.

We are now thinking that we will just arrive in town and walk around a bit and into a B&B to see if they have a room for the night. Is this approach realistic, and is it appropriate to ask for a discount on a room for that same evening?

Actually Feb is a slow time in Florida. Seems that all the snow birds have left by then.
We always used to have "florida resident" discounts at all attractions, etc. during the month of
February. Sometimes in early November too.

Jeanne.. there are plenty of B&B's in St Augustine... I live 1/2 away from there.. in Jacksonville and St Augustine is one of my alltime favorite cities... if you want to email me directly.. Maybe I can get some more specific info for you.

Another possibility would be to stay on St. Augustine Beach. The Fiesta Motel is nice and has a mini-golf right next to it. Of course this is not near the attractions so you would have to drive to get right in the Old Town section. Just a thought. Have fun regardless - I love St. Augustine.

Do not stay at the Holiday Inn on the beach, it is overpriced for the middle of the road average motel rooms. It is directly on the beach however, which is the only plus about this property. We stayed there 2 years ago, so maybe it has improved since then. Make sure you go to Old Town, visit the fort there, dine at A1A brewery, take a boat ride at sunset. Have a good time!

We stayed at the St Francis Inn in the center of the old town. Liked it very much. Yes there was wine and cheese in the evening but I'd also say it's a family-friendly place. Within walking distance of everything and they have bicycles available. They have one or two family rooms/suites - certainly there were families staying there. I was trying to remember the name when I saw St. Francis mentioned. It is a very nice BB spread out over three buildings with a lovely breakfast and patio. I recommend it as well although I thought the Casa Monica looked pretty good.
