Where to Stay in SF in Nov.

Hi.
My boyfriend and I are trying to plan a trip to San Francisco November 1-5.
Found a great deal ($95 a night) to stay at the Hotel California (formally The Savoy) on the corner of Geary/Jones.

I’ve never been to San Francisco before, is this a good neighborhood/hotel to be based in? We do not plan on spending a lot of time at the hotel but do not want to stay so out of the way that it will be a trek to go back and forth.

Also, anyone have any strong opinions on Napa vs Sonoma?
We are trying to plan an overnight trip to on while we are out there, and any recommendations as to where we should stay, and which of the two we should visit would be great.
Thank you in advance.

Can't resist this ...

Welcome to the Hotel California
Such a lovely place
Such a lovely place
Plenty of room in the Hotel California ...

On a more serious note - I only have been to Sonoma county and thoroughly enjoyed the area. Healdsburg is a really pretty town and, I think, a good place to stay when visiting the area.

:-O "STRONG" opinions about Napa v. Sonoma here on Fodor's??

Stand back, my friend!!! :)>-

As for your SF hotel, I think it's on the other end of the block from The Monaco (geez...I wonder if we know anyone who likes the Monaco) so how bad of an area can it be? Decent but borderline Tenderloin. :-?

If the hotel you are considering is the former Savoy, then for one thing it has a vegetarian restaurant (Millenium) on the street level. Millenium is not your standard cashew loaf and sprouts place - it's more an up-market place. The location is fine. Just remember to walk on Geary eastwards to Powell and then turn right if you want to walk down to Market Street. If you walk straight down Jones to Market you will be in the start of the Tenderloin, which is not the ritiziest of S.F.'s 'hoods.

Let me try, how about one day in Sonoma and one day in Napa, and stay overnight where you can get a great hotel deal?

Kal, now I've done it ...

I will be there at that time too,....only on business. They have put me up at the Moscone Center.

Any opinions of this place? Walking distance to great restaurants??

FainaAgain Sep 1st, 2006 11:21 AM

Does Moscone Center itself have a hotel now? Or does it have a different name?

annesherrod Sep 1st, 2006 11:43 AM

Faina-
If I had read my memo more carefully I would have read that the Hotel is actually the Hilton. It must be close to the convention center!

Is it cocktail hour yet??

FainaAgain Sep 1st, 2006 12:14 PM

Every hour is the cocktail hour on MY calendar :)

Oh, that Hilton! Walking distance to Moscone. I think the Clintons stayed there too. You may rub shoulders with celebrities :) Be careful at night in that area, try not to walk alone.

Thanks Faina!!

I may pick your brain closer to the date for some ideas. I was in SF about 6 years ago. I Loved it!!

thanks!!!!

FainaAgain Sep 1st, 2006 01:20 PM

Anne, hurry!! There is less and less to pick! And if you don't believe me, ask Kal.

Will you have time for a GTG? We can extend the cocktail hour into a cocktail night :)) I promise not to use my sleeves ;)

=;
Please let the record show that I DID NOT make a joke about someone picking Faina's brain.
Due to tons of "fan mail" I'm trying to be a kinder, less kaustic Kauai klown now. :-B

Please let the record show that my e-mails to Kal are never "fan mail"
:*

A GTG sounds in perfect order!!!

I have added on extra days for fun!!!

Kal - I need some ideas here. Start "brain Storming" !!!!

FainaAgain Sep 1st, 2006 03:33 PM

Don't ask Kal. In another post he said he'd lost his marbles.

annesherrod Sep 1st, 2006 08:01 PM

He had better go find them!!!

But, I better find mind first!

I stayed at the Hotel Adiagio just a 1/2 a block from the Savoy. Just stay east on Geary as Dovima pointed out and you will be fine.

As you will discover, many people can get quite belligerent about their opinion of either Napa or Sonoma. I live in the Napa area and, of course, have a bias. The wines are great! But not all wineries are alike. My favorite is Peju (on highway 29, 1 mile past Mondavi, heading North). The wines are superb and the tasting room is FUN! They sing, yodel and have fun with their guests. The gardens are lovely. The tasting fee is refunded with the purchase of a bottle of wine.

Thanks for that tip!!!

I will add that to my list for my Nov.trip!!
