Where to stay in Seward?
 

My DH just booked a surprise cruise for us to Alaska over the week of July 4th. However, where can we stay in Seward that is not too expensive (~$100) for 1 night after the cruise? We thought we could drive to Homer or something, but it doesn't look like any car rental is available either for that weekend. Doh! What to do?

Any rustic cabins to rent in Seward if hotels are not available? Camping is out of the question since we won't be lugging camping gear around for the cruise.

And we're planning to take the bus to anchorage but the day after the cruise since it leaves in the morning. We'd like to spend at least one day/night in Seward or nearby.

Summer is high season in Alaska and hotel rates are not cheap. Think Hawaii and you will get the idea.

I usually stay at the Seward Military Resort http://www.sewardresort.com/ but that requires a military ID to stay as a guest. With July 4th being a major holiday weekend in Seward, I would get on the phone and start calling for reservations <b>ASAP.</b> I don't have any other suggestions except to look at Tripadvisor for ideas, start calling <u>now</u> and don't expect any bargains. You certainly won't find anything for $100/night.

Late booking for July 4th means options will be limited, sorry.

We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Seward, which is pretty new and has good views of the harbor from half the rooms (the other half have bad views of the parking lot), but probably double what you mention. There were a couple of older hotels across the street that were probably less expensive, if they have rooms this late.

There's some b&b's but even the extra room over a garage/money under the table place we rented a few years ago was $100 and you needed a car to get there. If there is any room downtown at any price, you should grab it. Seward is small.

Orlando_Vic ... don't want to hijack this thread (though I agree that finding something for under $100 in Seward during the high season is highly unlikely) ... thanks for mentioning the Seward Resort ... called up this morning and managed to get in here for our upcoming trip in August. We were going to be at the Holiday Inn for considerably more.

Do realize that is the date for the Race up the mountain, and that even limits the options even less.

We have stayed at a variety of places in the Seward area. We go there at least once a year.

In May 2010, we stayed at Box Canyon Cabins; our two bedroom cabin was truly wonderful. Since they are located on the outskirts of Seward, you do need a car.

We have also stayed at the Farm; it is also on the outskirts of Seward; it is fairly inexpensive with some of the smaller rooms under $100.

We have also stayed at Murphy's Motel (located in Seward so no car is required), Camelot Cottages (on the outskirts), the Spruce Moose (near Moose Pass and quite expensive now), and Teddy's Inn the Woods (between Moose Pass and Seward).

Seward has a lot of B&Bs. The best place to search is http:www.seward.com/directory/index.php Almost every place in and around Seward is listed.

Thanks, all, for the great info! If we couldn't find anything, we could just take the 6 p.m. bus to Anchorage.

You could also take the afternoon train from Seward to Anchorage.
