Where to stay in Savannah
 

I will be ending a week long trip to Hilton Head with one night in Savannah. While on a similar trip last year, I stayed by the Savannah airport. This year I would like to stay in the historic district. Can anyone recommend a hotel or bed and breakfast in that area for about $150 a night? Is that even possible in Savannah? Thanks

The Mulberry Inn is well run and lovely.

You should have no problem getting a room at that rate unless you are coming during the Spring Blooming season and the St. Patrick's Day week. (yes, we celebrate before, after and during The Day. It's a big party!)

this is a map of the Historic District. Bull Street is the center of it and the blocks are numbered from 1 on Bull street and go up both East and West. That is, # 204 East Bay would be in the second block East of Bull, #204 West Bay would be in the second block West of Bull. I hope this helps.

Go down any lists of hotels/motels on Fodors or other travel sites like TripAdvisor.com check out the addresses and locate them on the map. The Mulberry Inn is really a lovely place, but it is on the outer Eastern edge of the District. The entire district is about one mile in either direction.

Higher than $150/night but best place in town to stay...........

I'll get ripped for this because it is a bit ugly, but the DeSoto Hilton is well-managed, well-located, and provides tastefully appointed rooms. From the outside, it is a big, plain building, but on the inside it is up there with any other Savannah accomodations.

My sister agrees with cmcfong, always stays at The Mulberry Inn. We have stayed at The Gastonian (wonderful, but I just won't spend that much money anymore with so many other good, less-expensive options) and The Hyatt on the river. Lately, we've stayed at a La Quinta and a Clarion, outside the Historic District because we have the dog with us. I am never disappointed in Hampton Inns ... that might be a very good bet! Have a great night in Savannah ... :-)

I third the Mulberry Inn. Also, I liked Planters Inn (except for the haunted part - I was scared :( ).

If you want a full-service hotel with room service in a great location I would stay at the DeSoto Hilton. I am not a fan of B& B's and so was very happy at the DeSoto.

If you are planning on doing a walk around the Historic District, and your time is limited, the Mulberry may not be one of your best locations. It is a lovely place, but you will have a walk of several blocks to get to the central main "walk" with the squares. If you enjoy a good hike, this would be no problem.

If you are driving, then, it's a good location for a sight-seeing drive around town.

We stayed at the Hyatt because we were attending a coference, but I walked over to the Mulberry and I'm pretty sure I would choose that if I were to return.
I liked the area of the Mulberry better-cleaner, I thought, and not so touristy. It isn't a very long walk to the "main" areas if you like getting any kind of exercise at all. It's a very pleasant walk.

I second the Hampton Inn Historic District. Great location, you can walk to everything, however, they do charge extra for parking. My DH will not stay in any B&B ever, so this worked very well for us.

Hamilton-Turner Inn has a business rate -- Sunday through Thursday for about $150. Lovely mansion on Lafayette Square in the historic district. Great gourmet personal chef, with complimentary breakfast, hors d'oeuvres, wine plus bedtime sweet. www.hamilton-turnerinn.com
