where to stay in San Francisco

What is the best area to stay in in San Francisco?

If your definition of "best," is the same as mine, the answer is "Union Square." However, if you want a motel with "free" parking, you won't find it that area.

We chose to stay in Fisherman's Wharf at the brand new hotel...I forget which chain it was! My DH hadn't been to SF b/f and wanted to do all of the touristy stuff so it was fun to be able to walk to so much. Plus, we are runners so we ran to the Golden Gate and back with amazing views!

I have been to the Union Square area of SF 3 times. I stayed at The Four Seasons once and the Ritz Carlton twice. US is a very nice area even though the RC is up the hill. I really liked the FS. If I go back I will stay at the FS.

Depends on your budget, interests and whether or not you'll have a car.

The Argonaut Hotel in Fisherman's Wharf was very nice. Check the ratings and comments about it. It is not a chain hotel and has atmosphere as it is a former cannery. The location is great!

My house. :)
Seriously, how much do you want to spend and where in the city do you want to stay? There are a lot of great hotels at reasonable prices, both inside and outside San Francisco.

Here's a 2nd vote for the Argonaut. Near Fisherman's Wharf and next to the cable car turnaround. Lovely hotel.

*Argonaut in Fisherman's Wharf/Ghiradelli Square area
*Washington Square B&B in North Beach area (in between Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf
*Union Square area is good for theater district and shopping - we liked Stanford Court, but there are many hotels
SF is not that big and public transportation is good. And you can easily walk to different areas.

We stayed for decades at the Marines' Memorial Hot. and then at the (now Ren)Stanford Court, but the the Hot Chancellor on Union Sq is the best bang - ask for a room on the 11th floor in the rear.

Thank you so much for the help! We would like not to have to drive at night and be able to have access to restaurants and nightlife. We don't care about parking and we can get around in the day. We were thinking of bidding on priceline so thanks for all the information. It gives me an idea of which areas to bid.
