Where to stay in San Francisco
 

My husband and I have hotel reservations at the Sheraton Fisherman's Wharf for September 4-5. We're using Starwood Points but were just advised not to stay in Fisherman's Wharf because it's completely touristy. Would love some feedback on the hotel and area if anyone has stayed there. And perhaps some alternate hotel suggestions.

Someone suggested staying at the Four Points Hotel by the airport and just driving in for the day, but where would we park? And since we're only in SF for 2 days thinking we should stay in the city proper. Since we have points to use, a starwood hotel is preferred but not required.

You'll be fine at the Sheraton at Fisherman's Wharf.

Fisherman's Wharf is the number one hotel destination in San Francisco. Union Square is number two.

The airport hotels are a bit south of the city and not as convenient as Fisherman's Wharf, IMHO.

If you are concerned about the quality of the hotel, check out tripadvisor.com for generally reliable hotel reviews.

Is that a problem if it's too touristy?? I agree with Easytraveler that it's a great location.

Well, yes it's touristy but it's ONLY the place you are staying and I'm sure you aren't going to spend all of each day at the Wharf. It's also convenient to transportation to other areas of the city and you are right by the ocean..well the bay actually..but I just love the look and smell of the water. It's the one thing that I miss terribly since leaving the Bay Area and Lake Tahoe just isn't the same. Have a nice visit and watche out for Bushman!!!! (:

Yes, Fisherman's Wharf is tourist oriented, but hop on a cable car and you will be at Union Square in no time.

From there you can shop, get good transportation to the Museum of Modern Art, or the Embarcadero, where you can visit the markets at the Ferry Building. In fact, if you are "walkers", you can actually walk to these locations.

You might actually like the "color" of FW, as long as you can escape it.

Actually, you can get a bus from Fisherman's Wharf to the Embarcader.

We have stayed at the Sheraton Fishermans wharf and it is a nice hotel in a good location. There is also a small outdoor pool.I would not hesitate to stay there, especially since you have the points.

I'm not a great fan of Fisherman's Wharf. Yes, it is VERY touristy. But are you going as tourists? If so, you SHOULD see Fisherman's Wharf, and why not stay there. It is as convenient as anything else. Anyone who would suggest staying at the airport and traveling back and forth for two days is nothing short of NUTS, in my humble opinion.

If you are going to San Francisco to do business and will be working in a particular section of the city, then I would look for another hotel. But if you are going as tourists, it would be sad indeed if you failed to do the primary tourist offerings of this great tourist city just because you want to pretend you AREN'T a tourist!

After experimentation with a variety of neighborhoods, we find we prefer to stay at a hotel near Union Square. However, you will be much happier at Fisherman's Wharf than stranded out by the airport.
