Where to stay in San Diego
Well, having had so much help from all of you in the past, I thought maybe you SD vets could help me out again.
We stayed in the Gaslamp district last year, rented a condo and had a wonderful time. So good in fact that we are returning to celebrate our silver wedding anniversary. We loved the Gaslamp because we literally parked the car for a week and went everywhere on foot or transport - is there somewhere similar in the SD area with those qualities i.e. being able to walk to restaurants/bars/shops etc and having easy access to public transport.
I am more of a beach person (not a babe anymore unfortunately!!) but my husband likes the city life - I am sort of wondering about the beach towns around the area or places like Mission Beach/Bay but they would need to have enough in them for hubby. It is hard to get a real idea bout these places in the guide books.
Thanks in advance for all of your expert advice.

La Jolla seems to fit the bill of a beach town with lots of stuff in walking distance, although public transport out of La Jolla tend to take a looong time.

Mission Beach also has a lot of places, but a bit less upscale.

How about doing a couple of days in Coronado- great beach but just a few shops- then switching to La Jolla or Mission Beach?

We are quite happy to get in the car to tour around but love the ease of leaving the car during the day or at night particularly if eating and drinking. I like the idea of La Jolla - didn't manage to see it last time.

If you're fine with having a car to tour about in, then either La Jolla or Del Mar would be perfect.

Hands down Downtown La Jolla!! Gorgeous beaches to walk, shopping and lots of fab restaurants..
When are you coming into town?
Here are some links for you to check out..

Must do restaurants are;
George's at the cove (upstairs)
La Valencia for drinks or brunch on the patio overlooking the ocean
Marine Room
Harry's Coffee Shop

I would not do Mission Bay or Pacific Beach..
You are going to love this town!
Happy Anniversary...

Thanks for all the info on La Jolla - sounds like our sort of place. We are coming during the last few days in Sept and spending almost three weeks in lovely, lovely California.

Please disregard the mis-information about the folks out here who are rejoicing that all the tourists have left...especially those who depend on tourism.

Perfect weather in mid September and you will have a blast because most of the tourist are gone.. For me who lives in one of the most visited places in the country, La Jolla, most San Diegans really enjoy the passing of Labor Day because that means that our beaches are wide open, the trash is all picked up and driving to and from isn't a nightmare to go a couple of miles...San Diegan's love our tourists and we need your dollars but after 3 months of summer craziness, one is ready for some peace and quiet..
Have a wonderful time and keep us posted on how your trip was..

Thanks once again for all of your interesting input - does anyone have any opinions on Carlsbad?
