Where to stay in San Antonio?

We are planning to be in San Antonio March 15-18 and having difficulty finding accommodations. We would like to be in the Riverwalk area, we think? Is this the best area? Does anyone have suggestions? Has anyone stayed at the Sheraton on Riverwalk North?

Just about any where around the Riverwalk is nice--check www.traveltex.com for some information and the SA Chamber of Commerce site. Do you want economy, luxury, older hotels, newer hotels?

Three of us went to San Antonio in October for the first time. We were told to definitely stay on the Riverwalk. After walking aaround the areas and spending five days, we all agreed we would stay at The Menger and it was not necessary to stay on the Riverwalk.

The Menger is definitely nice, but if you want B&B atmosphere, then stay on the far end of the Riverwalk at a plcae called Columns on the Alamo. Wonderful, reasonable and EXCELLENT food. Within walking distance of anything you could possibly want to see or hear. Cab from the airport is recommended - don't even rent a car. Have fun!

If you are looking for economy, we stayed at a Travelodge a few years back that was within walking distance to the Riverwalk area. It is your basic Travelodge, no frills except a sleeper sofa and a larger than average room.

We stayed at the Wyndham St. Anthony, whichis a block off the Riverwalk, and we loved it. It is a Grand heritage hotel, which means that it is old but very classy.

There is also a Hawthorne Suites downthere that is very popular.

We are going to San Anonio for the first time on March 14-17 also, so maybe we'll pass each other on the Riverwalk. I did quite a bit of calling around and did find quite a few of the hotels have already been booked up for those dates so you should get reservations soon. We are booked at the Sheraton Gunter which is supposed to be about a half block away from river and four blocks from Alamo. Hope we like it, the price was better than a lot we looked into and the sleeping arrangements were more what we were looking for. Good luck and I hope we have great weather and a great time!
Michele

I would definitely reccomend the Menger, particularly if you are a history buff. A sorts of items from the Civil War, and the Teddy Roosevelt era. Plus, there is a back walkway into the rivercenter mall, which lets you get to the riverwalk.

Read your message and the replies. I live in San Antonio and would comment as follows: Gunter and Menger are old, with some history but a little worn around the edges. If you want quality on or near the Riverwalk, I would suggest the new Westin Riverwalk (on the Riverwalk and open about 1 year),the Plaza San Antonio, a Mariott (about 1/2 blk from
the Riverwalk) or the La Mansion Del Rio (on the Riverwalk). These are probably going to be expensive and in downtown SA you won't find many "weekend" deals. There is also a Hiton on the Riverwalk which is about 30 years old but very well kept up.

Less expensive but quaint you might try the Crockett Hotel (2 blks from the Riverwalk and across the street from the Menger- an old hotel now owned by Holida Inn) or the San Antonio Riverwalk Holiday Inn which is mid-quality but on the Riverwalk.

Good Luck!!
