Where to stay in Sacramento?
Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced place to stay in Sacramento? Is downtown the same as Old Town?
We are traveling to see family for a few days (in two weeks). My parents will be with us and they want to stay "downtown" so we can walk to the park or other nice areas. We have no interest in seeing the Capitol but have no aversion to staying near it either. Would like free breakfast and free parking if possible. Our family lives in Roseville area, so easy access would be nice too. thanks! |
Old Town is the small area between I-5 and the Sacramento River.
On the east side of I-5 is considered downtown. Which park are you referring to? Cesar Chavez Park is south of I Street across from City Hall. The Capitol Grounds is several blocks south of there east of the Capitol Building. My favorite cheap place to stay in Sacramento is the HI Hostel at the NW corner of 10th & H. You can make your own breakfast in the kitchen. My Amtrak friends like the Vagabond Inn which is a bit more expensive but is closer to the Amtrak station and I-5 (free breakfast). I read a couple of bad reviews for the Econolodge (16th & G). My new favorite breakfast place is Jim Denny's on 12th between H&I. (closed M&T) otherwise open at 7AM. Hope this is helpful. |
If you stay downtown, you won't be walking to any nice areas. There is an Embassy Suites along the river in Old Sac. I would stay there or stay closer to family up near Roseville.

What is your budget?
I disagree w/ michelleY a bit. There are lots of walkable things in central Sacramento. The embassy suites is close to old Sacramento, the river, and the wonderful Crocker Art Gallery.but a long way from other things. But in 'downtown/midtown' there are almost uncountable restaurants, pubs, cafes, brew pubs, etc. However - either old town or 'downtown' can be a truly hellacious commute to Roseville. If visiting family is the main point, stay closer to them and visit Sacramento as a day trip. Where/what part of Roseville? That would also make a big difference. |
It's not in downtown, but we've stayed at the Residence Inn in South Natomas, has free breakfast and parking and light meals M-Th. The Embassy Suites also sounds like a good choice. In downtown we stayed at the Sheraton but no free breakfast or parking.
