Where to stay in Pismo Beach/San Luis Obispo area?

Day after Xmas heading down by car to LA from SF Bay Area. Want to take our time coming and going and so plan to spend one night each way on our trip somewhere along the Central Coast. Any recommendations of fun/nice places to stay along the Central Coast in Pismo Beach or San Luis Obispo or even a little further south? 2 parents and one 6 year old on trip - looking in the $100 price range. Thanks

You might consider Morro Bay. It's a fun place to walk around and go touristy shopping. We have enjoyed the following hotels there: Blue Sail and La Serena.

Morro Bay has a minature golf course and an old town theater, both of which might be enjoyed by a 6 year old. There's also a park down in the Embarcadero area that the little one might enjoy. Quaint seaside town of 10,000 - not fancy, but a nice place to relax and spend an evening. For a decent pizza, try the Pizza Port or head down to the Embarcadero for some fish and chips. Enjoy the trip and consider a stop at Hearst Castle for an amazing experience.

How about the Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo? A themed hotel with each room being different. The cave room is supposed to be a lot of fun. You might want to check with the front desk and see what other themed rooms they have. There's also a children's museum in downtown San Luis Obispo. The downtown area (including the Mission) is a great place for a family to roam around. The Coldstone Creamery is also a great stop for ice cream.

Have fun - Sam

People on this site have made fun of the Madonna Inn, but we loved it. Stayed in a room that was affordable, nice and very interesting. No matter how much you travel, you'll never forget how unique this place is.
