Where to stay in or around yellowstone?

We are planning a trip to yellowstone the second week in august and haven't figured out where to stay yet. I know we are really behind on planning where to stay, but any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. There will be 4 adults and 5 children (ages 10 months - 5 years). We are considering camping, but wanted to compare other lodgings options.

When visiting the northern part of the park we stayed just outside the park in Montana at the Northern Yellowstone B&B and Cabins. They have 2 cabins which would suit your group if both available. B&B is misnomer as breakfast is not included, but great stay!!

I would try for in the park. They might be full right now, but they get cancellations from the folks who booked las year and now can't go. These often don't make it to the web page, so you need to call every day and book whenever room comes up. In the mean time, make a cancellable reservation outside the park.

Go to www.nps.gov and search Yellowstone. This will provide information on camping as well as on the locations of the lodging choices and the phone number.

We split our time between Canyon and Old Faithful. I loved the Old Faithful area. We had a cabin there and I could see the eruptions from my window. But I really enjoyed lounging on the porch of the Old Faithful Lodge. We sat around and talked with other visitors and watched Old Faithful do its thing.

You can read about it in DW's trip report at http://www.fodors.com/community/unit...s-710-2509.cfm

We spent three nights in cabins - one at Old Faithful, one at Mammoth, and one at Canyon. I don't camp, so this was a great choice for our family. My trip report is here on Fodors as well - click on my name and you'll find it.

We stayed one night at Old Faithful Inn, one at Roosevelt, and one at Lake Hotel. We loved the entire park. Mammoth area was out least favorite.

If you end up having to stay outside of the park, West Yellowstone has plenty of hotels and restaurants, and it is right outside the western gate to the park.

Loved BarN Ranch, slightly outside of West Yellowstone.
