Where to stay in NYC?

My mom and I are going to NYC in May and we've narrowed our hotel options to 3 (all under $200) - Flatotel, The Mansfield, and The Shoreham. We know we want something near a subway station, hip/modern decor, clean and comfortable. We've picked the top 3 and now we're stuck. Any suggestions? Please help...Thanks!

midwestgirl, from my experience with NYC hotels, hip/modern decor usually means very tiny rooms. Not sure about the Mansfield but the Flatotel and Shoreham are both nice.

I agree with GoTravel about hip=tiny rooms in NYC. Since you're with your Mom, beware that some of these hip places only have 1 bed in the room. Will you care? Have you checked reviews on tripadvisor? Here's the URL for the Manhsfield review

I like the location of the Shoreham, fwiw. Here's the review page

I really like the location of the Mansfield but be aware that the rooms are quite small.

Thanks so much everyone for your help! We've booked the Flatotel for our trip in May. It's supposed to be spacious, even if we do have to share a bed, oh well.
Now, any good restaurants you can recommend? Thanks!

NYC has thousands of good restaurants.

What flavor(s)?

Do you want all budget places - or are you interested in one or two splurges?

Atmosphere vs cuisine?

I'd also suggest checking out the Red Roof on 32nd and 5th- very close to Penn Station and Macy's and the Empire State... I think the La Quinta across the street is owned by the same folks: www.applecorehotels.com

nytraveler: A splurge or two is always good, but we don't want to spend a small fortune every night.

As far as flavors, we like a variety. We love italian, mexican, thai. The only thing we aren't interested in is sushi. And mom's not a big meat eater, so no steakhouses. Oh, and we love seafood, too.

We love little out of the way neighborhood places. Nothing too fancy or stuffy for this trip. As far as restaurants, it doesn't have to be the hip new place, either, as long as there's good food.

And if it comes down to atmosphere vs cuisine, we'll take the cuisine.

Thanks!

Midwestgrl,

I'll throw in with Domenico's at 40th and Lexington...two blocks south of the Chrysler bldg and Grand Hyatt.

Unpretentious, reasonable by Manhattan standards, and consistently excellent food and service.
