where to stay in N.O.

First time visitor to N. O. & taking my 2 sons (ages 21 & 23), in mid may. I was told not to stay in the French Quarter - too noisy & you can't sleep but is that only if your room is on the street side? I want to find an quaint, smallish historical hotel, near or in the French Quarter, with gardens, courtyard, in a safe location that doesn't cost an arm & leg - under $200/night.

I completely disagree with the advice not to stay in the French Quarter. In fact, I think that's the absolute best place to stay. Granted, I wouldn't want a room facing Bourbon Street, but most places have rooms overlooking courtyards and/or pools, so noise shouldn't be a problem. If you do a search of this board , you should find lots of places in your price range.

Definitely stay in or around the Quarter.

Donna,

I've been letting everyone know about a great new hot spot in New Orleans that's been receiving a lot of good press lately. It's Frenchment Street. (Check out the April issue of Travel & Leisure.) There are wonderful shops, restaurants, and jazz halls. And it's only a short walk to the French Quarter. Anyway, I recently stayed at Frenchmen Orleans at 519 (owned by French Quarter Condos - 800-525-5202). They have newly renovated and charming vacation rentals that will sleep four and are under $200/night. The units have private kitchens and jacuzzis and share common courtyard/pool and spa. I think you'll love it.

Have a good trip.

Eve
Eve,
How is your hotel's business these days? You sure are in a marketing Spam mood today, aren't you?

You want the Place d'Armes, its got everything you want PLUS a great location in the Quarter next to the Cathedral.

Have you considered a B&B? I highly recommend La Maison Marigny, which is located on the quiet end of Bourbon Street, within walking distance of the French Quarter. Lovely rooms, pretty courtyard, and homemade muffins to die for! The owner, John, is a regular contributor on this forum but abides by Fodor's rules and never toots his own horn. My husband and I had a wonderful stay there. www.lamaisonmarigny.com

Hotel Provincial gets a lot of good reviews. HOWEVER, my husband and I weren't too impressed with our stay there a year ago on a non-peak time.
We had to have our room changed three times. The first room was simply unacceptable. It was $129 or $138 a night. AAA gave it wonderful reviews and so do a lot of books saying that it won the restoration award and all this and that. We'll if you consider 1975 dark walnut furniture in an 8x12 room state of the art, wreaking of cigarette smoke facing Decatur St your idea of grand, then by all means, go there.
What we didn't appreciate was that we paid extra for a DELUXE room and we're informed that those were the deluxe rooms. They were the crappiest rooms, because we were promptly moved to a courtyard room which was tastefully decorated and obviously renovated recently and they were calling that a STANDARD room. Go figure.
But beware courtyard rooms very noisy!!!
Then they made us leave that room after two days (not our decision) and moved us
to a different building on the property
into another STANDARD room, even though
we'd paid for a DELUXE room, and that
standard room was totally the BEST!
It only had a double bed but overlooked Ursuline St. (nice and quiet) and it
was very quaint. It had 14 foot ceilings with a fireplace. The brick ran
the whole length of the ceiling. it had
nice furnishings and draperies.
Oh, room number two had blood all over the pillow cases on the first night when we pulled back the sheets to go to bed (no people..I'm not making this up)
So it did freak us out a little.
Having been to New Orleans six times now, I prefer Le Richelieu (Chartres Street)
This was our first stay at Provincial.
I'm not staying there when we go back
Went on a Haunted Histtory tour and they said the Place d'Armes is haunted, so is Provincial. The original room that
they gave us was an old civil war hospital, which then became an ice house
then was converted into hotel rooms in 1972. They say that's where the ghosts appear.

We just got back from New Orleans and stayed at the St. Ann Marie Antoinette. It is such a nice quaint hotel. The staff were friendly and very helpful (tours/restaurants) and the courtyard is very comfortable and quiet. The rooms were a little outdated, but for the bargain basement prices, you can't beat it. Great location in French Quarter (between Royal and Bourbon), and very quiet even on a Saturday night.

http://www.chateauhotel.com/

stayed here a few years ago. it was the cheapest french quarter hotel we could find. it is in a great location. a couple of blocks from bourban street so you don't get the noise but just a short walk to the center of the party. just a couple blocks from the river too.

Lafitte Guest House is on Bourbon Street but away from noise. It is beautiful and rooms are less than $200.

With sons 21 and 23, the ONLY place they would want to stay is the French Quarter. Beware of the 3 for 1's (21 for 7 as the locals call it) which start at about 3:00 in the afternoon, or the Huge Ass Beers. You may never see your children again.
