Taxi from JFK, how are tolls paid?
I know this is a silly question, but looking up taking a taxi from JFK to Manhattan, I find sites that say it is a fixed cost "Plus tolls and tip".
Do the tolls just get added to the final fare I pay, or am I expected to hand the money over at a toll booth?

Further to this, all taxi drivers are supposed to have an EZ pass so that tolls are charged electronically and the discount (substantial) is passed onto the passenger. The new meters actually do this automatically, so you get to see the real total (previously, these were added on at the end as "extras"). I like the new system a lot.

Where are you going? I realize there are a couple of routes possible, but I have yet to pay any tolls between JFK and midtown Manhattan. Every time I take a taxi, they say the toll-less 59th Street Bridge is the best way to go (usually to the mid 50's).

Yes - but if you are headed uptwon or downtown you probably will pay a toll at the Midtown tunnel or the Triborough bridge. And even for midtown a lot of cabbies take the tunnel - depending on traffic.
