Where to stay in Memphis?
Hi -
My family is going down to memphis for an extended weekend (instead of our original plan of a week in DC). We wanted a hotel with an indoor pool, and price close to 100/night (I know, I am cheap!) ... so without knowing the areas, I booked a fully refundable stay at the Holiday inn express by the airport ... however I am wondering if there is another, better choice. We are going to "do" graceland, sun studios, beale street, civil rights museum, will have a car, and have two kids under 12 (one a very active little guy, hence the indoor pool...)
Thanks.

Hi grayfamily
We have been to Memphis twice and I would stay downtown near Beale Street. The hotels that come to mind that have pools, other then the Peabody which is very expensive, but you must walk in to see the walk of the ducks, would be the Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn. The prices are well above what you want to pay but you can't beat the location. Another hotel within walking distance to Beale would be the Sleep Inn which is on the Trolley and about 4 blocks to Beale however it does not have a pool.
I guess I've not been much help. I know the Holiday Inn near Beale offers packages that include Graceland. You might want to Google it and check it out.

I recently stayed at the Hol Inn Exp Memphis Airport. The hotel is new. You are several miles from the airport.
The neighborhood by the airport is bad. You are several miles from the worst neighborhood, But you aren't in a great neighborhood.
The hotel is gated. Always a sign of trouble in the past. The lobby has the afterhours vestibule with bullet proof glass. Also a sign of trouble in the past.
If I were traveling on vacation, I'd find something in Germantown or downtown.

I often stay in hotels on Poplar Ave- near S.Shady Grove. The Embassey Suites is comfortable for a family - has a small indoor pool too and ducks in the lobby as an homage of sorts to the Peabody. Hot breakfast included. There are lots of restaurants nearby too. In the same vicinity are a Hilton, and Hampton Inn and a few others. Safe neighborhood, easy highway access - about 20 minutes to downtown.

I live in the Memphis/Shelby county area.
NO! to the airport!
Questionable to Sycamore view/I 40.
I would either pay to stay in the premium downtown or on the Poplar corridor.
I saw a new Courtyard adjacent to the new mall in Collierville.
Search for Germantown, Collierville, too. They are adjacent suburbs.
There are some afordable hotels on Germantown Rd.near I-40 and Wolfchase mall.
I like the Embassy Suite idea. I love hotel and a very good Italian resaurant there owned by the famous Grissanti family. Great Mexican and New Orleans style within walking distance. In fact there is a Hampton adjacent to the Embassy...address would be on Shady Grove. Off I-40/Poplar
You have got to eat BBQ at Corky's on Poplar. That is near!

Try Southaven, MS. It is on I-55 and close to Memphis. There is a Reidence Inn, Courtyard, Holiday Inn and Fairfield, in addition to a Comfort Suites, and a Hilton Garden Inn. There is also plenty of shopping and restaurants in the area. I know that both the Courtyard and Hilton Garden have indoor pools. They are both great places to stay and are in a safe area that is about a 10-15 minute drive to Graceland and downtown.

Sorry, that is the Residence Inn. When I can't book the Peabody, I like the Hampton on Beale St.. It is pricey downtown but is close to everything. You might also consider the Marriott at the convention center. It is on the trolley line and has an indoor pool.
