Where to stay in Maine

We have 3 days in Maine the first week of October. We'd like to stay in one or two places along the coast. Inns or B&B preferred. Under $200 a night. Private bathrooms and non smoking. Good firm bed important.

Quiet, romantic, clean and with character and nice hosts.

We fly out of Portland so the last night should be fairly close.

Any suggestions about what to see appreciated. Don't know if we'll catch any changing of the colors.

First night Welch House Inn in Boothbay Harbor....second night closer to Portland, Inn By the Sea in Cape Elizabeth.

Billowhouse in Ocean Park would be another final-night choice, only about 20-25 min to Portland jetport...but only if you want peace and quiet, it's just a few people and a wide stretch of beach this time of year.

Hi Family Camper! Don't forget to look at the dates of the original post. Garymey asked in September about a recommendation for his stay in October. Since it's now January, I doubt Garymey will be back to read your recommendation (though it's probably a good one!). Also this mean the post will be sent to the top of the list again, making water muddy for more recent topics. :) Just a friendly reminder. Have a great day!

Blair Hill Inn in Moosehead is the most perfect inn I've ever stayed in. GORGEOUS rooms, GREAT hosts, WONDERFUL setting. It's not on the coast -- it's up in the lake area of Maine, so it's particularly perfect for hunters and fishermen. We do neither of those things, but we do love an elegant inn. It was written up recently in Conde Nast's travel magazine, and I think it deserves all the credit they give it. What a place!
