Where to stay in Lake Tahoe in July
DH and I have a special anniversary coming up and we want to go to Lake Tahoe for a week. Not looking for budget - but not Ritz Carlton either. A nice condo complex would be great or hotel with kitchenette. Would love views of the lake. We will be hiking, biking, playing in and around the lake so some place with some nice amenities would be great, too. If we could walk to shops/restaurants, that would be a plus - but don't want to be in a super crowded/loud area either. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

There are various areas in Lake Tahoe that are wildly different from one another. Some people like South Lake, which is where the big casino hotels are (Ceasars, Harveys), along with tons of motels, condos, rental houses, etc. Most aren't actually on the lake. Then there's the West Shore, which is more "old Tahoe" (and to some extent old money) - no hotels, but lots of vacation rentals. Then there's the North Shore, my particular favorite, which is lots of developments along the lakefront (and not), not as developed as South Lake, very low-key, walk to the ice cream store vibe. And then there's Incline, which is on the Nevada side of the state line in the north - the Hyatt there is great, and has access to the town beach, rec area, etc., as do town residents, including renters I believe. Everything from lakefront mansions to small condos up the hill.
One thing that's really nice is the very long bike path from Sugar Pine to Tahoe City. You can ride about 40 miles round trip, and there's plenty of places to stop for a great lunch (we love the West Shore Café after a long bike ride).
So, once you decide what kind of vibe you're going for, you can narrow down what's available.

I'm sure MichelleY will be by shortly to comment, but I see she also mentioned the West Shore Café in another post. Another place we really like for breakfast and lunch is Fire Sign Café (no view, but great vibe and really good food).
I realized you mentioned hiking - the hiking at D.L. Bliss State park is excellent (parking is a b***h through). There's great hiking all around the lake.
Walking to shops and restaurants is not so easy anywhere.

Like sf7307 says, lots of choices at Tahoe and lots of price points.
We used to stay in Truckee for years at Tahoe Donner. Nice pool ammenities and the town of Truckee has nice shops and restaurants. The last several years, we have been renting a small house in Incline. Renters also have access to the pools and private beach areas(for fee). If I could afford it, the Hyatt at Incline is in a great location or the rooms at the West Shore Cafe.$$$$!
The are small motels along the shore from Kings Beach to Carnelian Bay, but I cannot give any specific recs.

I like Incline and near Tahoe City.
But for killer views -- I'd probably consider Brockway

Our favorite part of the lake is from Zephyr Cove to Incline Village, on the east shore. Much of it isn't any busier than north shore, but access to SLT and its casinos and infrastructure etc is much faster.
Here are VRBO's current listings for Zephyr Cove and surrounding areas:

Lots of great ideas! Thank you. I am researching now! Question for Tabernash - Sunnyside Resort website says that the summer months are very busy and resort is quite noisy. Did you find this to be the case? Brockway is already booked. North Shore sounds great and kind of our style. Does anyone have any lodging recommendations for that area?

Brockway, Incline, Incline, Tahoe City, etc are all 'northshore'
Re Sunnyside -- I might not stay there but it is a great place for lunch.
Try Dollar Point or Carnelian Bay or just anywhere in Incline.

I wouldn't stay at Sunnyside. Raucous bar crowd right out your window.
Look at this place. I have driven by and it looks cute

FYI Cal-Neva Lodge on the north shore is due to reopen on May 26th. It's been upgraded to 4-star with larger bathrooms etc. I've always loved the place and its location, and fortunately they've kept the original/Rat Pack feeling to the casino, Indian Room etc.

SaltysMom, I don't know about the noise, but it seems others here do know. We just stopped for lunch. I had a friend's daughter who waited tables there, and new SIL's family place is next door to Sunnyside. That's all I know. Sorry.

Congrats on a special anniv!
We stayed here 2 yrs ago and enjoyed it.

About a 20 min walk to Stateline but there are a few good restaurants right in that area. Lake front townhomes might be too big?
We got a Pinegrove Town home and since we have been staying at an Aston property on Kauai almost every year since '89 they gave us the 4 bedroom/loft. A bit too big but quite enjoyable.
I was wondering when CalNeva was reopening. We used to stay there when we'd come up for softball tournaments at Incline Village in the 70's early 80s.
didn't go back until a friend's wedding on 10-10-10 and while the old gal was showing it's age THE VIEWS WERE FANTASTIC!
Can't wait until it does reopen.
