Ouch, MoonFish, a bit unfair to paint all renters with a broad brush. Some of our best (most peaceful and relaxing) vacations have been as renting guests of homes and apartments, and we have always been respectful of our "home away from home' and the surround neighbors. Living in a tourist state, I can relate to the craziness that can ensue from an influx of visitors. Sounds like you have had a bad experience, and I must admit I wouldn't want it next door (luckily our deed restrictions do not permit it). However, I do still believe that staying in more of a home setting (specially if the stay is longer) is a great option vs. being in a cramped hotel room.
Another vote for LACMA. But having been been to all three museums, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of them. You've received some good info and can always google each one to see what they have to offer since they are all unique. I hope you make it to at least one of them!
Since someone mentioned The Grove - adjacent to it is The Original Farmers Market. I think it's more food establishments than actual "market" but you might find it interesting. We had lunch there and picked up some tasty desserts for later but also enjoyed the people watching!

Here's one more suggestion (in case you still need options!) - Petersen Automotive Museum. We found it quite interesting and I don't think you need to be a huge car fanatic to enjoy it. But you need to buy tickets in advance. https://petersen.org
Lots to do! Have fun!

LOL. Perfect NIMBY example.
You need to experience AirBnB from the residents' perspective to understand the problem. You don't even have to live next door to be impacted. If renters show up at a SoCal beach rental with 4-5 cars (or more!), it creates a big headache for the neighborhood. Having an AirBnB literally next door could easily depress surrounding neighbors' property values. Before my beach town banned short-term rentals, properties (houses, condos, apartment buildings) were being purchased with the sole purpose of turning them into quasi-hotels. During special events in town, there were so many 'party' houses that our small police department was overwhelmed.
mia22, the Getty Center and LACMA aren't comparable. The Getty is in a fabulous setting, has dramatic architecture and a great view on a clear day, and has an interesting (mostly) native plant garden. Its permanent collection focuses on only a few areas of collection and is entirely Eurocentric. Its exhibit space is about 1/10th the size of LACMA's. LACMA is the largest encyclopedic museum west of Chicago, and its collection is from throughout the world, encompassing nearly the entire history of art.
I like the location of the Kimpton Palomar. You can walk to Westwood Village, bus to Santa Monica Pier, Beverly Hills, LACMA. Getty Center would be a short cab or Uber ride. But there are dozens and dozens of hotels and locations that could work for you. You'd get better advice if we knew your budget and whether you decide to rent a car.

Yes, Santa Monica is higher than nearby Marina del Rey.
$250/night will still be tough.
I reserved a single queen room @ The Inn at Venice Beach, for this month, for $213/night + parking. A simple continental breakfast is included.

I'm pretty sure you'll find the Kimpton out of your budget range. Try this one a few blocks away. Free parking!

<Nobu in Malibu on the deck overlooking the ocean with some of the best sushi, an hour or two before sunset is an incredible moment of food and views!>>
Remember a few hours before sunset will be around 4 pm. In late Oct or early Nov I think the time changes and we lose an hour of daylight. It should be dark at 5 or 5.30 pm. So you won't see the ocean.
Huntington Beach is not that iconic of a surfing spot.
Beaches at Malibu, Topanga, Santa Monica, are closer to LA. Then down in the Orange County area are Doheny, Redondo Beach, Manhattan Beach.

Not to be pedantic, but I just want to jump in and clarify some points nanabee made:
Huntington Beach has GREAT surfing for experienced board riders (very large waves, wonderful breaks) and has a well-developed downtown area with a beloved pier. It's not as well-known as Surf City USA as, say, Malibu (everyone knows about Zuma Beach, for example)-- but surfers know it very well. However, it IS in Orange County on the coast; if you're not going anywhere else in that area it's very much out of the way. If you're going to set up headquarters for a few days to see Disneyland, the Queen Mary and the Aquarium of the Pacific in gritty ol' Long Beach or the Mission in San Juan Capistrano (yeah, not scintillatingly exciting, but peaceful and lovely and historic-- and SJC is a cute beachside town too), HB is a fun place to visit.
Also: Doheny State Beach in Dana Point IS in Orange County as well, as are lovely Laguna Beach (I was just there for a couple of days and had a very nice time) and Newport Beach. Redondo Beach and Manhattan Beach are NOT in Orange County; they're in Los Angeles County just south of LAX, and technically are still within the city limits of the City of Los Angeles (although they're separate cities).

Take a look at Sea View Inn in Manhattan Beach, for a random Tuesday in Sep. it was $199 plus tax, a block from the beach and they loan beach chairs and Strand cruisers (bicycles).
nanabee, Manhattan, Hermosa and Redondo Beaches are in LA County, NOT Orange County.
