Where to stay in death valley?
 

Will be driving from Las Vegas to Yosemite via death valley on October 6-8. Can anyone suggest a place to stay around death valley?
Will appreciate any advise/suggestion

Furnace Creek Ranch. Furnace Creek Inn is far better and far more expenisive. I think it opens mid-october. The two are a short distance from each other. It will still be pretty hot at this time of year. Death Valley is a wonderful place in the winter, but I am not sure about Oct. I have a feeling it could be maybe just slightly warm or downright hot. There is a lot to do in DV and it really suprised us at how much we enjoyed it.

Furnace Creek Ranch is available, while Furnace Creek Inn will still be closed.

Stovepipe Wells would be an inexpensive option, but they are already booked on Oct. 6, while they are available on Oct. 7.

All three hotels are operated by the same company, Xanterra.

As traveller1959 said the Inn is still closed. Furnace Creek Ranch is a motel-type facility. Clean, reasonbably comfortable and close to a lot of the best DV sites. There is also camping available. Storepipe Wells is more remote and I don't think the accommodations are as nice as Furnace Creek. Store, restaurant and golf course also at Furnace Creek.

Thanks for all your suggestions. Apologize for the lag. Just checked Furnace Creeks inn. It's not available for 6th oct. How's panamint springs? Last I checked yesterday, it was still available.

Furnace Creek Ranch is a perfect place to stay. It has standard motel type rooms and a descent restaurant.

Stovepipe Wells is not as well situated as FCR, and the rooms were on the scrary side the two times we stayed there.

I haven't stayed at Panamint springs, but we stopped there for a lazy lunch. I kinda liked the desert feel, but have no idea what the rooms are like. If Furnace Creek weren't available, it would probably be my next choice. Most afternoons the air force jet fighters from Las Vegas do dogfight practice over Panamint valley for an hour or two.

I know this won't be any help with this post, since I'm so late, but I did want to get in my two cents. We went to Death Valley towards the end of June last year and stayed at Stovepipe Wells. I agree that Furnace Creek is probably a bit nicer, but we were perfectly happy with Stovepipe Wells. It was very '50s motel, very plain, and the room a/cs were loud (which I like for sleeping, so it didn't bother me) - but that's it. Not scary, the pool was nice, the food was good, and we liked the location (Mosaic Canyon, sand dunes, and closer to out goal the next morning: Scotty's Castle). As to temperature - it didn't bother us. Granted, we weren't walking huge distances in the middle of the day, we had a/c in the car and motel, and the pool (spring fed) was refreshingly cold - but 115 degrees of dry heat was a lot better than our 94 at home with humidity bringing it to a feel like temp of 104. There were not crowds, which was nice, but there were people there - we weren't worried about the car breaking down and no one finding us. I only heard one other American accent - there were lots of Europeans and some Canadians. If you go in summer, just be sure to take lots of water and keep drinking it - just like we did a couple summers ago in Arizona and New Mexico.
