Where to stay in DC area?

Our family will be traveling to DC in late June to site-see and need some recommendations on areas/hotels to stay at. We'll be 2 adults, 1 eight yr-old and 2 Seniors. Would prefer a locale close to the Metro as well as eateries close by. Please HELP!

Driving or flying? Price range?

Downtown DC is best (Dupont, Metro Center) if you won't have a car. If you need parking, look at Crystal City, Rosslyn, Clarendon, and Ballston areas of Arlington. And search on this forum for lots of recent discussions on this topic.

This is a well-discussed topic. If you go to the search above and put "hotels" and then click "Washington, D.C." you will get hundreds of threads.

DO NOT consider the President Hotel on
NY Avenue . Last night a DC news
program exposed filth, mold, rats, hairs in beds, holes in the carpet and more in this hotel.

Yep, NY Ave in Northeast DC is to be avoided at all costs. The other areas where hotels are located (in DC and nearby Va) are fine, though.

New York Ave NE is not a very desirable hotel area but then, most NE addresses will not be that desirable. As a family you may not care too much for the Harrington Hotel. The Holiday Inn in Chinatown is a decent location as is L'Enfant Plaza but Dupont Circle combines hotels, restaurants, and Metro stops.

Priceline is great for Washington hotels.

Carham, I am wondering: where did you end up staying in DC? We are a family of four and will be meeting 2 seniors: grandprents with car. My kids love a pool. I am not sure where to stay that would be family friendly but historic too.

junepo,

If you click on carham's name, you will notice that he/she has only posted twice - the last time being 5/7/07.

carham will likely never return.

I suggest you start a new thread.

junepo - we were just in DC for 5 nights in June. Our family of 4 (kids ages 11 and 15) stayed at the Hotel Palomar in DuPont Circle and really loved it. It is part of the Kimpton hotel chain. We had an extremely large room with 2 Queen beds and a large bathroom as well. The staff was very nice and the concierge gave us excellent dinner recommendations, and often got us in places at the last minute. The location was great right near Embassy Row (my 11 yo son particularly liked that), very close to the DuPont Circle metro stop and a lot of great restaurants nearby.

There was a pool, although we never used it. Not sure about the parking for the grandparents with the car, but I am fairly certain the hotel has it for a price.
