Where to stay in Chicago?

My wife and I are going to Chicago this fall and are curious about where to stay. She wants to be near the theaters and shopping while I'm out on business meetings. Any suggestions?

The best area for shopping would be on North Michigan Ave. but the theaters are closer to State St. Although there are stores on State St. the best shopping would be found on N. Mich. Ave she could take a cab or bus to the theaters. (I assume when you say theaters you are talking about live theater, if not movie theaters can be found near Mich Ave.)

Isnt the new Peninsula opening up in Chicago this fall or already open? If you have the money, why not try it out? The ones in New York and Beverly Hills are 5 star and supposedly very impressive. If you do, post an opinion here.

The Omni on Michigan is fabulous. Safe lobby entrance on second floor. Wonderful suites and service. You can get a suite for $175 with an entertainment card or some other discounts. Worth every penny. great location.

The Hilton Palmer house is fantastic and reasonably close to the museums. It's a beautiful, well maintained hotel that is a pleasure to stay int.

The House of Blues in Chicago has a fun hotel.

Just returned from a five-day vacation in Chicago. Spent two nights at The House of Blues hotel and two nights at the W City Center. House of Blues was fun, quirky, fairly close to everything you'd need/want to walk to. The W was closer to the financial district - and also close to the theatres, but farther from shopping. The W is far superior in room quality, etc. - but, I didn't enjoy the location as much. Next visit I'm going to try Hotel Monaco. It gets great reviews, and the location seemed perfect for everything. We passed it almost daily as we ventured about the city.

we stayed at the hotel burnham in chicago last year and loved it. it is in a historic office building that has been completely renovated into a hotel. it has a great location - we walked to restaurants and the big marshall field's is right across the street- and the hotel itself is wonderful.
