Where to stay in Charleston and Savannah?

Hi! We will be staying in Hilton Head, but are wanting to make side trips to Charleston and Savannah. We have two 4 year olds that will be going with us. Any ideas on child friendly accomodations for a 2 or 3 night stay in each city? Would like something historic, but I realize that may not be realistic with the kids along...If not, what about hotels? We will be traveling in the month of June. Thanks for any input!

My husbands brothers live in Charleston and we went there to visit. It was beautiful we went in April over Easter so the weather was nice. If you go in June plan on very hot weather. We stayed in The Mills House Hotel which is on meeting street in the heart of town and it was wonderful. We don't have kids so I can't tell you about that, but you know what now a days just about everyone excepts kids and besides this hotel is a Holiday Inn Hotel but just very colonial looking. It was a little expensive, we payed $259.00 a night, but it was well worth it. Good luck on your search and have a wonderful time it you go.

When we have had the kids we've stayed at the Hawthorne Suites. It's a small chain similar to Embassy Suites. Rooms are lovely with antique repro furniture and all the amenities of an Embassy Suites. Location is great, it's right across the street from the old market. We walked everywhere. Last time we were there an Embassy Suites was to open soon in a historical building. Hawthorne has deals on rooms too, through the Entertainment book, AAA and their 800 number. W/out the kids, I'd stay at the Omni!

RE: Charleston...I have also heard, from a trusted source, that the Hawthorne Suites is the place to stay!
Re: Savannah...we are going next month, and I can tell you the historic district is expensive. Maybe a better alternative would be Tybee Island. Try the new Howard Johnson (2 years old) we stayed there for $29.00 a night! Very Clean!

Based on my extensive stays in the area, in Charleston, I would stay at the Isle of Palms beach area (try the Sea Cabins)or on Sullivans Is. and drive into the downtown historic district as desired. The Isle of Palms is the best kept family beach secret in the US. Likewise, I would not stay in downtown Savannah but stay out at a cheaper nicer place or stay in Hilton Head and drive in to the sights. Dont miss Fort Pulaski Natl Monument. Kids and adults love it.
