What is your budget--makes a big difference.

Since it's your first trip you should stay in the historic district. It's pricier than outlying areas, but worth it. There are many nice hotels.

There is no area that is commonly called "The Historic District". That are many historic sites and samll areas that offically called "historic" but none where NY'ers use that name.

Sorry. I think we're talking about Charleston SC.

Yeah, I DO think there's a historic district in Charleston!! Duh!! But definitely a NYer's take--we must be talking about NYC!! BIG <G>
To the OP, there are VERY expensive places in the HD, and more reasonable--hence your budget. And I imagine that will be a pretty busy time.

Yeah, there's a historic district. Just ask the Charleston Board of Architechtural Review, lol! But I do think first-timers need to stay down there. I've spoken to people who didn't and wish they had.

Firstly, what is your nightly hotel budget?

My favorite upscale hotels are: Wentworth Mansion, Charleston Place, Market Pavillion, and Planters Inn.

Less expensive: Doubletree, Harborview, Church Street Inn, Meeting Street Inn, and a few more.

Less expensive: Days Inn, King Charles Best Western, Andrew Pinckeny.
