Where to stay in Bend area

Hi. Was thinking of driving down to Bend from Seattle some time during the summer. Last time we stayed in the Sunriver community. I know there has been alot of development last few years that way just wondering if there is a new and exciting area or development that's gone up recently we should think about staying at this time. Being within walking distance from things is a plus as we will have a 4 year old with us. Thanks for your help.

The Old St Francis School is a fun place to stay- close to downtown -

The AmeriTel Inn is relatively new (about 3 years) and is very nice. It sits on the hill above The Old Mill District, where there are shops, restaurants and a movie theater, right on the Deschutes River. Ask for a view room overlooking the Cascades. 800-600-6001.

Depends on the atmosphere you want. Mcmenamin's Old St. Frncis School is in the old downtown area of Bend. The Old Mill district has more more "shopping center" feel. If you want to walk the paths through the trees, my vote would be to stay again in Sunriver.

Which is better, downtown Bend/drake park or the old mill district?

I probably want to rent a house. I was wondering if there was something new along the lines of Sunriver that has been developed.

Never stayed here because my children live in Bend.

Good call Johnthedorf.

Travelinandgolfin: Personally, I like the old downtown/Drake Park area better. The Old Mill District has the Old Mill Shopping Center (REI, movie theaters, restaurants) and the Les Schwab Ampetheater. It is a nice walk along the river. However, the old downtown has charm. Very walkable, restaurant, art galleries, etc. If you happen to be in town on the first Friday of the month, the First Friday Art Walk is very fun and the downtown is hopping.

Thanks Barb.

We're going to be there only one night and probably will have time to stop by at only one of those locations for dinner.

Drake Park also looks nice for a walk after dinner. I hope it's as nice as the pictures I've seen.

John, a restaurant I really like is Pine Tavern. It is an old restaurant (with a tree growing through it!!) and is located near Drake Park. Check it out at www.pinetavern.com

Jeez, I hope not. I doubt she's been more than one winery east of I-5, much less Bend. ;-)

When you say "walking distance from things" what do you mean, Gordon? Not a new place by any stretch, but for years my family has enjoyed Black Butte Ranch, about 30 miles NW of Bend. It's a little less high desert than Sunriver, with beautiful mountain views. Less commercial too, but still with intereesting sights and activities for all of you. http://www.blackbutteranch.com/

As for other possibilities, you're right, there are newer resorts at various stages of development. But at this point, none of them come close to comparing to either Sunriver or Black Butte.

beachbum I was thinking of a community like either Sunriver or Black Butte that had things that had restaurants/activities that are walking distance within the community. You pretty much answered my question though, so thanks for the response.

barbann, I know the Pine Tavern well! Lunch on the Patio is a treat. The only problem with Sunriver and Black Butte is that you are pretty far out of Bend.
"Being within walking distance from things is a plus as we will have a 4 year old with us". For that reason only is why I thought Mt. B. Village was a better option.

John, you made gave a good suggestion. I mistakenly answered travelinandgolfin's question with your name. Sorry for the confusion.

travelinandgolfin Jun 4th, 2008 12:34 PM

Barb, I'll check out Pine Tavern.

Do make a reservation and I suggest lunch on the patio.
McMenamin's Old St.Francis School and restaurant may be a good choice for Gordon with his 4 year old.
