We are heading to Acadia for three days this week. We're planning to hike two days and bike one. We were wondering whether it would be a mistake to stay in Ellsworth (much less costly) than Bar Harbor. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Unless you are saving a lot of money, I say don't do it. I think you would waste time traveling from Ellsworth. It's a good 20-30 minutes each way. And it's not a particularly interesting drive. Have you looked at staying in Southwest Harbor which may have some less expensive accommodations? What price range are you looking for?

Thank you for your response. I would like to spend under $200 per night. I'm unfamiliar with the area. Where is Southwest Harbor?

I think you could find a place for that on SWHarbor. I don't know how to explain where it is other than in the southwest part of the area. Check out a map. If you go on Trip Advisor you can get an idea of the notes, inns there. SWHarbor is really nice, lots of hikes, easy access to the more famous areas on Acadia and way less people.

You don't have to stay IN Bar Harbor, but I would recommend staying anywhere on Mount Desert Island over Elsworth. There are so many places along Rt. 3, I can't imagine not finding something under $200.

Also, especially if you are talking weekdays rather than weekend, I would be inclined at this point to just drive up and look for vacancy signs.

I agree you shouldn't have a problem finding something for under $200. We enjoyed our stay at Bar Harbor Motel.

Acadia Inn is fine as are the Quality Inn and the Best Western. Even the Days Inn would be better than Ellsworth. There are a couple of little downtown motels that aren't bad if you're not fussy, perfectly clean just a little older and worn. What dates?

Highbrook Motel would be a greatd choice, Aurora Inn not bad at all. Eden Village near Salisbury Cove is just acceptable, but better than Ellsworth.

I agree, don't stay in Ellsworth. You can check out acadmimagic.com for a list of hotels, b&bs, inns and see what suits you. We've stayed at the Acadia Inn, which was fine, and have often stayed at the Bar Harbor Regency, but that might be a bit out of your price range at this time of year. Lots of places to choose from.

I am arriving to the party to help the OP but Highbrook Motel lies just outside downtown Bar Harbor with easy access to the main entrance to the park. It is an family-owned, older motel that is maintained in pristine condition. A continental breakfast is included. Rates in September to mid-October run $109-$139. We truly enjoyed our stay and plan on returning next year.
