April is expensive in Vegas but if I were you I'd make a reservation and then just keep on looking and checking back. They do go down sometimes and if they do you can re-book.

The monorail is useless as far as I am concerned (my opinion only) -- it is set rather far back from most of the hotels and you still have to walk very far, it's also expensive. It's not handy for any of the hotels on the north side of the strip, however there is a FREE tram between Mirage and Treasure Island. There is also a FREE tram from Bellagio to Monte Carlo and a FREE tram between Mandalay Bay, Luxor and Excaliber.

The map I posted above will tell you how central all those hotels are. You can go to www.lvmonorail.com for the monorail map. I'm not sure what is meant by it not being convenient for the northern hotels. It serves all the northern hotels well except Stratosphere, and that's not that far of a walk from Sahara. It is expensive though.

As to cost of rooms - currently all the summer specials are out, but there are no specials yet for April. You should find the rooms getting cheaper as you get closer, but probably not until fall sometime. I'd book something cancellable now and keep looking as you get closer.
