I'm sure this is not timely but for other visitors I recommend the Sheraton in Weehawken NJ. It is steps from the ferry and rooms are suites. We stayed there and loved it.

the trouble with the Sheraton is that you have to pay for the ferry back and forth - not cheap for 5 people. As for the idea of Rockland County - that is simply silly - you are at least an hour from Manhattna - and if there is traffic it can easily be 1.5 hours each way.

Simply - for 5 people you really need a suite and NYC is dirt cheap only in Jan/Feb.

Also agree that hotels might no allow you to put 3 small kids in a room by themselves - they certainly don;t want they walking the halls either. i think they will require you to put an adult in each room unless the oldest child is at least 16 or so.
