Where to stay?

Hi

We're planning a trip to New York next summer and the package has a choice of Salisbury or Milford Plaza as the hotel - can someone tell me which to go for, please? It's just me and my boyfriend and we want to explore and do the sight seeing as much as possible - thanks

I don't know much about the Salisbury, but it's gotta be better than the Milford Plaza!

OK - can you expand on that a little bit more??

Salisbury (parents stay there frequently) is a great hotel. Caters heavily to a European crowd and musicians playing at Carnegie Hall across the street.

Great location, West 57th, couple of blocks from Central Park, Times Square, excellent shopping, Rockefeller Plaza, etc.

The rooms are very large because the Salisbury used to be an apartment building. Try to get a room on the 17th floor as these rooms have 20ft ceilings. All rooms have wet bar and microwave. Excellent value for excellent location.

Thanks for that - grateful for a personal recommendation

The Milford Plaza is widely known as a "last-resort" hotel. It's cheap, and there's a reason why! Gross rooms and incompetent staff.

Definitely choose the Salisbury.

Type Milford Plaza in the search function. Mix yourself a drink and be prepared to spend a couple entertaining hours reading through the negative stories about the place, mixed with one or two "it wasn't SO bad" posts. After reading all the posts, I don't think you'll want to stay there. You might try the same with The Salisbury. I seem to recall several posts about it being pretty disappointing too, but my guess is it HAS to be better than the Milford.

Let me guess. Are you in the UK? These are two hotels which are primarily booked by UK travel companies, as most US companies do not like booking people there. Same in Las Vegas with Circus Circus.

How could any tour offer two of the worst hotels in New York City as your only choices?

I agree nothing special about either. I wouldn't consider a package my self?? Why not just go Priceline- definate better options there, or book direct with another- better hotel???

I must respectfully disagree with the above posters urging you to look at other hotels than the Salisbury.

My mother is probably the pickiest people on earth and loves the Salisbury Hotel. The rooms are huge, the location is perfect for Midtown, the staff in wonderful, and the price is great. I've not stayed there but have spent time there with my parents and love the hotel.

My parents could afford to stay at more affluent hotels but love the homey feel of the Salisbury.

If your choice is limited to these two, definitely the Salisbury. 57th is a busy street because of the cross-town traffic. Ask for a "quiet" room on a high floor or one facing north upon check-in.

The location and the look of the Milford Plaza place is just plain horrible.

Thanks for all of these responses - Milford Plaza is definitely off the list!! Dare I ask your opinion of another hotel, please? I've looked at other packages and there is now Hotel Metro in the melting pot - can't find many refernces to it if I use the search option so any help would be great..!
